Not that I'm anywhere close to needing to take the Songbird to the field...but I built a field stand just the same! So armed with a few boards, glue and screws...here is what I came up with. The stand has removable legs. I plan to use shorter legs to hold the wing during transport and set up at the field. Velcro straps hold the plane across the tops of the nacelles.
So now the "Brutality of Reality"...I haven't tried to get the plane in my SUV and will be surprised if it fits! But that's a bridge to cross when I get there.

I had mentioned in an earlier post that there was some confusion (at least on my part) as to the whereabouts of NC59188...either in Hector MN as shown on the FAA regestry or at the Confederate Air Force Museum in Mesa AZ. I called the owner this morning and the plane is indeed in Mesa AZ. I asked him if it was still in flying condition and it is. He invited me to call him when I'm there in April and he will meet me there to take pictures, sit in the cabin...and get this...go for a flight! Wouldn't that be cool!! Not sure I can pull it off as I'm there on a business trip and inot sure f I can pull away for a bit...but I'm gonna try!!

If anybody is interested, I have the Don Smith T-50 Plans, Kit by Precision , Fiberglass parts, Windscreen, Robart Gear, and 2 G-23. I have switched to a full scale project and will not be building the Bobcat.

Yes! I need the cowls, nose piece, tail piece and the canopy. I have the retracts and I'm using two Saito 170 radials. I'll take the rest. Give me a price. Thanks, Bill [email protected]

Hey Rich, he contacted me and said he doesn't want to break it up??? Between us, he would just need to off the plans and the engines. Maybe he'll change his mind. Just spent $180 on lighting for the plane today. I found an actual Rotating mini strobe. I figured I'll get it all wired before covering. Bill

Rich, I stumbled accrossit surfing the net looking for lighting for my Bobcat. He has very limited amounts of the Rotating beacons because they are tricky to make and take a lot of time. The guys name is Paul Evans and the website is www.ametservices.co.uk. His e-mail is [email protected] . They don't list the beacons on the site but he has some left. There is a video on you tube of the Beacons but I don't have the link. I told him what I needed for the plane and the length of the wings, colors and all that. I ended up spending $180 but I think it is going to be well worth it. Tell Paul I sent you and he'll give you the info on the beacons. I want the Beacon for the upper back of the plane. Plus it is 2 speed. The slower speed is perfect. Bill

Rich, I don't need two g-23's, the plans or the retracts. I need the cowls, nose and tail piece and the canopy. Can you use the retracts and the engines? I'll see what he wants for the whole package. Bill

Bill.......I am using Sato 180's, so I do not need the engines........but I would like an extra pair of landing gear to use as replacement parts ......you never know when you might bend something on a bad landing.......if you know what I mean......Rich.

No Problem. I am having second thoughts about the radials in my bird. I would still need triple glow drivers and keleo ehhaust and then its finding room for all this stuff in the nacelles. I may go back to twin gassers, Just don't want to hack up the cowls. I'm trying to find out which small gassers would fit without hacking the cowls. I think I can still rig scale exhaust exits. I put my Radial up on RCU tonight. Bill

I think the Zenoah G-20 fits with just the tip of the plug sitcking out, or less. I held one up to mine right after they came out. Take a look at the DLE 20s, they are tiny little gassers and put out the same power as a G-23. Friend has one swinging a 16x8 at 8,000 plus and its new.

I would sell everything with engines for $1200 plus shipping. I can send pictures to who ever wants them.

Thanks for the info Jeff. I think that the Fuji 24's would do about the same, just the plug tip sticking out. I want to make sure I have enough power in case one engine goes out to get her in. Bill

Guys...I must confess...I've strayed. I bought a metal lathe and I've been playing with that...but I'm back on track now!

In reading the discussions about engines, I selected the G26's because I had to of them with equal time and both have always been very reliable. And in addition these engines were modified by Ralph Cunningham. They were originally the magneto version but he converted them to electronic ignition. The ignition module is in the rear of the engine so there is no separate ignition module to mount. And in the case of the T-50, there is very limited room. These engines swing a 18X6 prop about 8,500RPM...at a field elevation of 6,000ft.

I am using the stock Zenoah muffler rather than a pitts style because the engine has to mount flush to N-1 and the pitts muffler interferes with N1 and the stock mufflers don't. I played around with routing the exhaust in the scale position, but there's no room...So only 2 small holes in the bottom of the cowl for exhaust. And the spark plug protrudes thru as well so there's a small hole for that. It is possible to convert the spark plug to those very small ones with no protrusion...but I didn't do that either.

The G-23 I think will work just fine and will fit pretty much like the 26's. However they are probably a magneto version so if you go that rout, consider converting them to electronic ignition for more power.

I also have a scratch built, my own design, twin using 2 G20's and 16X8 props, 8,500 RPM.This plane is about 18 pounds and these engines fly it just fine... but definitely not over powered. The T-50 will weigh from 25 pounds on up, so (here we go with opinion...) I'm not sure the G20 is enough...at least at my altitude. I don't have a DLE 20 but I've heard they have a bit more power than the G20, but don't last as long...Fuji...I know nothing...

Thanks for the input onthe engines. I have my radial on E-bay and already have a bid on it. Would have sounded nice but between the cost of two of these, the glo drivers and the exhaust, I could equip the whole plane nicely. I may go with the G-26's myself. The are readily available, reliable and very resonably priced. I may go with the magneto version just to save room. Appreciate your input.
