I used National Balsa for my materials. They have 3/8 in. x 48 in. dowels for 57 cents ea. The 1/4 in. wing ribs (balsa) I cut from 1/4 in. x 3 in. x 48 in. sheets. I cut the 48 in. lengths in half and marked out 1 full rib and 1 half rib on each 24 in. piece. Total cost for the ribs (including the (4) 1/4 in. ply ones ) was $23.00. I DID choose to frame the warren truss section out of 3/8 in. square stock( like Balsa USA did) as it provided a stronger gluing surface for the cross bracing at the ply gusset plates. I did use dowels for the three stringers to keep the nice rounded look to the top of the fuselage and the dowel along the side of the fuselage keeps the fabric off the majority of the 3/8 in. square stock on the truss section. I considered splitting a 1/4 in dowel in half and gluing it to the bottom 3/8 in. longeron to "soften" the sharp edge of the square stock where the fabric wraps from the side to the bottom. I can always see how a piece of (ironed on ) coverite looks before I start covering with dacron and Dope.
I agree, I think Bob Nelitz' Cub is one of the nicer ones in terms of scale fidelity, that's why I'm taking my time with this one (I still have lots of ARFs to fly in the meantime ! )

Ok got my covering ,pinking tape, POly Tak cement, POly Brush and other stuff today. I will get the Poly Spray and the Paint (Poly Tone) later because Chip likes to shake and freshly mixed all the paints before they leave .I will not need them for some time. Anyways I when with the polyfiber system because if your going to build a scale Cub then you need to use the system they use on the full size. Chip at stits.com([email protected] ) Can hook you up with everything you need to do the Cub Scale. Here is the list of what you will need to do the 1/3 scale Bob Nelitz J-3 Cub.
You will need 7 yards of fabric, a pint of POly Tak cement to attach it, 4 quarts of POly Brush to fill the weave and apply the finishing tapes, 3 quarts of Poly Spray to make the aircraft opaque so you don't see through it, and 3 quarts of White Poly Tone 4 quarts of Yellow Poly Tone and finishing tapes.
Thanks
Billy

They were $80 plus a little postage. Got N numbers for the wings & rudder, Piper logo and the lightning stripe. The stripe was cut in pieces for the door side which will save some time and make lining up easier. These things are HUGE!

Ok Had a little time today to work on the wing .Work on the aileron well What I did and it turn out to work well was to use a 2-3/32 strips of balsa .Glue the first piece let dry turn glue the next piece over the first one .This made the round curve easy with very little sanding.
