Default Giant Telemaster - Best Gas Engine selection ??

Looking to put a large gas engine on the front of a Giant Telemaster to use for RC Skydiving and glider towing. What combination of engines have been successful on this airframe. The larger, the better.

Also, if anyone can shed some light on strut material that is being used on the ARF, I would appreciate it. Describe it or post pictures of the struts on the ARF would be greatly appreciated.

Are you referring to the ARF version, or the box of sticks? And I do mean a box of sticks! Ask me how I know?!

I am interested in putting the engine on the box of sticks. However, I am wondering how the ARF struts are constructed? Built up from wood like the kit?

Five years ago I was stupid enough to buy a 12' Tele that comes in a 3' box! I shoud have waited for the ARF version to come out!

Randy,

What did you put on it for an engine?

I never finished it!

Bought an 80cc Zenoah twin for it. Would have had to rienforce the heck out of the front of the plane for that motor.. I also bought the Tele to tow sailplanes.. Have since moved on to a 126" Pilatus Porter with a 106cc 3W twin..

OK then...

Is there anyone else out there that has successfully put a 80 twin on the Giant Tele kit?

How about a :

3W70i?

DA-85?

DL-111?

DA-100?

What's working for ya?

I had a G62 in mine and towed sailplanes all day long without a issue. If you were to put a twin in it you'd have to cut the cheeks off to get it to fit. The firewall is large enough but the cheeks would interfere with the heads. Maybe a cowl of some kind would work good. Mine bit the dust due to a strut failure. Its a massive build project. If you build one I'd suggest you get yourself a set of wing tubes and build them into the wing instead of using their method. The kit version requires the strut for support and any failure in the strut will cause the wing to fold. I noticed the ARF version uses wing tubes and I'll bet is not as dependent on the strut. Do a search on Giant Tele and you'll find a long thread here on RCU about this bird. If you have not bought the kit yet I'd say to consider the larger trainer that AMR sells. Much better, stronger kit. Thanks Jerry.

Great info Jerry.

I have read the long thread on the builds and have noted the failures due to strut ends. Did yours fail at the end connection point on the strut?

I have a plan for the strut material that I feel should hold up. Here is a link to the Jury Stut sections in 6 ft. length. You will have to scroll down the page to see it.

http://www.carlsonaircraft.com/struts.html

I have already bought a used kit built Giant that has a DL-50 on it. I am thinking that the 50cc may not be enough to haul up a 20lb payload. How heavy sailplanes were you towing?

I used the wood strut with a heavier aluminum braket on each end which worked fine. I noticed some sluggish response on the bird when turning to the right and that should have caught my mind as something being wrong. About 5 minutes later the wing folded. The aluminum bracket that attached to the wood strut had pulled out of the strut. The holes where the 4/40 bolts went through the wood strut and elongated and allowed the wood strut to seperate from the bracket. Your all aluminum solution looks like a winner to me. I did not attempt towing a large sailplane of 20 lbs. I'd say most of mine were in the 5 - 10lb range.

My personnel opinion is a 50 won't cut it. Towing 20lb birds I'd probably stick a 80 in there. With the G62 up front I had to add about 1.5 lbs of lead to balance so you really can't put too big a motor on the front end when it comes to weight. Good luck, Jerry.

Thanks Jerry,

That's good information to have on hand. I am thinking of using steel on the connectors for the struts with JBWeld and thru bolts. That will add some weight, but for a good trade off.

I am currently going thru the plane checking everything out. I have:
Found one aileron hinge that was loose on the left side so I cut out all the robarts on that side and replaced them.
Replaced all standard size high torque servos with 1/4 scale high torque servos with metal gears.
Installed all new carbon fiber push rods
Installed a tuned pipe on the 50 cc
Installed a steerable tail wheel with a dedicated servo
Installed a dual switch and second battery for the receiver
Replaced the ignition battery

Struts are next on the list.
Then building the jumper pods.

Anyone put a DA-100 on one of these Giants?

Landing gear was custom. You can get anything you want made to order via ABELLRC. Jerry.

Last week, I picked up new gear from TNT for the Giant T. It stand about 5 inches taller now with 7" Sullivan wheels.

Now I am ready for a larger engine.

I am supprised that no one else has chimed in with their large engine combination. I am sure this plane will haul the extra weight

I had the original telemaster with a G45. Lifted a 3lb video camera with ease. Shower rod with the ends flattened for struts. Never had a problem. If I were to to do it again, G-62. Needs weight in the front end. Leave the mag on it. Found a ARF 30% or so front cowling the trash at the field. Would look sweet on the tele. MMmmmm.....

I have one ready to fly (12' Telemaster) and i put a Fox 2.4 on it and now I'm nervous? Will it pull it ok? Does anyone know? Man I would hate to lose it. This one has alum struts and I used metal "thumb screws" instead of the plastic bolts to fasten them. Should I put a 50cc on it? The say a G-26 or G-38 will pull it fine and this 2.4 will blow them away but....
Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks, John....

I had a 43cc in mine originally and it barely flew at my altitued (6,000'). I ended up putting a G62 in it and it flew just fine. Jerry.

Thanks for the info! I just came upstairs from putting a Fox 3.2 on it, I got to thinking at 30 lbs HOW could this little engine possibly pull it off the grass and then you would have so little room for error, just seemed like a bad idea after reading all this. The 3.2 really is a running machine and should be much better for this plane. Once again thanks! John...

Well the DL-50 did fly the Giant Telemaster very well and had pretty good high angle climb out. However, as I stated in the first post, I am looking to haul up a lot of extra weight in the form of RC Skydivers. At least 4 of them at one time and maybe 5.

So I ended up going with the BME-116. All I can say is WOW!! I like this engine. Right out of the box, this thing fired right up and runs great and idle down so slow that I am finding that I need to add power to land the Giant T. And I was worried about the this combination floating right on by during a landing attempt.

The power to weight ratio is what sold me on the BME-116.

Here is a couple of pictures. I couldn't be happier with this combination for a jump plane.

I wish I could speak your language but sadly I cannot. John...

I have flow the Telemaster and the Fox 3.2 is too big! A 2.4 would have been a better match, it takes no power (at my altitude) to pull the Telematster. John....

A friend at the field built a 200% Kadett once. 13 foot span. He used a Quadra 40 to fly it, but it struggled. A good 50 or larger depending on the payload desired would work better. The 80 would probably balance it better and have a power cushion.

Interesting thread. I'm currently (slowly when I feel like it) building this kit.

My intention was DLE55, to be used for one Hang Time Ultimate, floats, maybe towing in the 12-15 lb range.

Should I be looking at bigger engines?

P.S. thanks for the link to the metal strut. I was going to run a strip of metal down the center of the kit's built up struts, but I think those would be better.
