Hey,
I got a broken in os .46 fx, and a new pattern plane for it will come tommrow! Anyways: What would be the most efficient prop to use in a pattern plane (Weight 5.5 lb)?
12.25x3.75 <- People at my club say the prop would be way to big for the .46 FX
11x7
11x6
10x8
10x6
Thanks!

The "best" prop is depends on your plane and what you do with it.
If you fly a GP Patriot, with a high RPM tuned exhaust system and hope for 110-120 MPH in level flight, you may want to use a 9x8, or even an 8.5x9 pylon racing prop.
If you have a sport plane, an 11x6, or an 11.5x6 would be your bet.
It depends on the type of pattern ship that you have.
I personally recommend the Bolly 11.5x6, for all around flying. It gives you good speed AND great thrust. I use it with my WM T-34 and it pulls it straight up and out of sight.
RPM is at 12,200, with a Tower muffler.

Check the following link
http://www.bolly.com.au/book/
This is "The Bolly Book" written by the owner of Bolly Props.
It contains all one wants to know, (plus a lot one probably didn't know) about Prop design, suitability and choice.
It also explodes a few popular myths.

We'd suggest that a 10 x 6 prop is too small for the O.S. Max .46 FX engine. O.S. suggests the smallest prop be a 10.5 x 6. We usually run a 10 x 7 or 8 prop, or an 11 x 6 or 7. Any of those sizes turn out well for general sport use.
Of course, if you're tuning your engine/airframe combination for specific performance, then you'll wind up with different props.
Basically, prop the engine for mid-to-high-12,000's when the model's on the ground. If your engine turns that RPM and flies the model the way you want it, then you have the "correct" propeller.

Normally ,I would agree, but the original post said it was to be used in a pattern type plane, hence my suggestion to use a 10/6. You don't need that much torque, but I suppose these O.S. engines can't turn the revs I'm used to. Frankly, 12,000 or so is pathetic for an engine of that price

Strange, my OS works great with a 11 X 6 and pattern. You want revs for pattern ?. Interesting. Now pylon racing is another story. The OS will hit an easy 15 to 16K with a APC 9.5 X 7 prop. Lots of that going on around here.
