I'm building a Great Planes Super Sportster 60 kit and would like to inquire as to your recommended Nitro engine for such a plane?

The two enginesI'm currently considering are the:

a)Evolution .60NX- $149

b)OS55 AX ABL - $159


Is there something else Ishould be considering?



Note: The plane has a 61" wingspan and should weigh 6 to 7.5 lbs. when built.

It is a full-size .61 engine and has a .91 version in the same frame, for not much more from other outlets.

It is true ABC, and will likely last longer than any ABN engine.

...And it costs just $50; roughly one third of the other choices you mentioned.

I have Super Tigre and Magnum engines. They are a really good deal. I have not had any issue with the Magnum engines I have.

I'd second the Super Tigre 61 ABC choice, especially if you look on the RCU marketplace on this forum. You can find them new in box, for less. Resale value on .60 size engines is at an all time low. That AX 55 isn't going to do that plane justice. It's an over rated engine, for .40 size planes, not 60 size. I had one on a Hangar 9 Pulse XT(40 ARF), and couldn't see any difference from a Super Tiger 45 but more fuel consumption.

Get a Fox .60 or .74. Improved carb. Won the MA.60 shootoff back in 2000 or so. Runs great on cheaper low nitro fuel. You can get it for half price if you turn in a junker, even an old busted 1/2A engine. The only thing better would be a Jett.

That .60s shootout, done by Dave Gierke, was in the 05/2003 issue of MAN, but you're basically right.

The engine has been improved since then, with a better carb.  And nicer finish.

Don't rule out the 91 size as they are bored out 61's at similar weight and size.

From just the two options I would choose the OS.

This model is designed to accept a full-size .60 engine.

This goes both for size and for balance (C/G matters). The Evo .60NX is a .40 size-frame engine and also weighs as much as a .40 engine, and so is the OS.55AX.
So, both of your choices here are 'wrong', as far as the designer/manufacturer of this model is concerned.

It is your choice, of-course, to mount any engine that fits and balances, which would usually mean any .60-.61... But now there are several such engines that were bored and stroked within their size-frame; and are now of .74-.91 cubic inch displacement.
You could easily drop-in one of them in this plane.

if this is the 71 inch span (older design) Super Sportster you may want to get a 74/75 or 90/91, my friend has one and it seams to be a bit heavyer than today's designs, he has a Super Tiger 91 in his and the power is right

"Kits" usually come out a littler heavier than the ARFs, because of that I would run a little bigger motor. Maybe a Super tigre 75 or 90.

You bring up a good point, DarZeelon. Although I'd say "both of your choices here are 'undesireable' " instead of 'wrong'. Iwill keep your point in mind for sure.

Tower Hobbies has the Super Tigre 75 for $129...but my coupons just expired yesterday! D'oh!

I have a ST.75 in mine. Love it. Comes out nose heavy with that big ***** muffler but still flys screamin fast and raises the hair on the back of my neck on low fly by's.

That heavy brick of a muffler is my only real complaint about the ST's.

How about a K&B .61 twister from MECOA.com

I have the COMO 90 with a bolt on muffler, not the swing type, and it is not too heavy. Maybe you can fit the earlier muffler to a new engine? Or maybe a Tower muffler that may give more power?

I would put a Mac muffler on the ST. Lots of other options.

Based on your first post. with only a $10 difference in price, I would go for the OS 55AX and not the Evolution engine. it is worth the difference in price.
But being a FOX engine guy, I would go with a Fox engine myself. Fox had last year reintroduced their Fox .50 engines and I would choose it over the other two.
If you have the room for it the Fox .60 or .74 is the way to go.

Your first experience with any repair parts will more than offset a $10 savings.

I'd go for the Super Tigre 61 ABC.

The 55AX is kinda a dud as far as the AX line goes. But with a tuned pipe it turns into a real power house. But really, that adds a lot to the price of the engine.

I have a 95AX w/ a tuned pipe on a Ultra Stick 60.

I pulled the trigger and ordered the Super Tigre 61 DUAL BBABC w/ muffler.
