FSR Ringed?
#3
I don't know about the .61 engine, but the .10 FSR is an old school iron/steel construction. It was only during the FP series that they started with ABN engines.

MJ,
Most original OS FSR (and RSR) series engines had a ringed piston (smaller ones were lapped cast-iron+steel).
Only in 1978-79 did OS begin to offer "ABC" (actually, ABN) versions of some FSR/RSR/VR engines.
The ringed version has a significant advantage that it cannot peel the sleeve, but the "ABC" made a bit more power...
Ringed and ABN version of the same engines were sold side-by-side.

The .40F SR was also available ringed or ABN, as was the .40/46SF and .61SF line of engines, you had more choices back then.

The SF series engines that you mentioned, began to replace most previous generation FSR engines, circa 1986.
The OP specifically asked regarding the FSR, but your addition info regarding the SF is useful; should such a ringed engine be encountered.

I wouldn't own the non ringed FSRs when they came out. I wanted to be able to restore the fit with a simple ring replacement, hence my insistence upon buying the ringed version. My old FSR is gone, but I did pick up another ringed one a while back for super cheap. Unfortunately, one look and you will know why it was so cheap. Lots of baked on carbon. I didn't buy it to fly it as I have much more powerful engines today. I just wanted to clean it up and put it on a display stand for exhibition.

I has the old catalog who was in the box for OS engine. There are two versions of OS FSR 61, one with ABC (Really ABN) and one with ring.
I can upload the photo of catalog of the OS FSR 61 later..

the little .10FSR was the oddball of the series as it was the only one with a lapped iron piston and bushings on the crank. it also had a single needle carb with no airbleed while all the others had a low speed needle.
the .28 was also a bit odd as it only came in a ringed version.

I have a few of the posters, one is old enough to have the max-S and max-H engines included in it.
I think the posters and included tools ended around the time of the intro of the FX line of two-strokes.

Yes, there was an ABN version of the FSR. I did end up owning and flying the ABN OS .61 VF. It was strong and I had no problem with a peeling liner. It had a lot of flights on it while blowing through its OPS muffled tuned pipe. A nice engine.

i never really felt one way or the other for the FSR line, they were on maybe 80% of the planes where i grew up and they just worked. kinda like the subaru of model engines. lots have passed through my hands but none stayed with me. a couple of friends and i had a ringed .40 that was our wh0re engine, whoever needed it just dug it out of the crash bin and flew it till it crashed again. never cleaned it, never cared what fuel it was fed and it never let any of us down. nowadays when i see an FSR it brings back fond memories.

the carb in that pic looks like the 7d or 7dv used on the 90-10s fsr's ...... most of mine came with the 7m?(3 needle version) my gold head fsr61 came with a 2 needle carb i think 7L i would have to check to make sure when i get home
*edit i just checked my "collection" of fsr 61s and 3 have the 7L one has a 7m and the other has a 7dv

Powerful? My HB .40PDP ran rings around it...
