A 40 SR doesn't have a back plate as it's a rear induction engine. Do you mean the 40FSR??? I have both but I'd have to check.

Just checked. A 40 FX will not fit a 40FSR. I may have a spare backplate. I'll look in my box of sapre parts.

Has anyone tried to see if the backplate off a 40FP or 35FP will fit the 40 FSR?

I have both, and could check, if there is any interest. I might try it just for my own curiousity.

I have a backplate for a 40-46SF part#25407000
I am not sure if it will fit your engine or not though.
Maybe someone can chime in

A four stroke may run without a backplate, but the con rod would be in peril if you did.

...yes and not only the conrod. The Bigend from the conrod can snap out to the backside of the engine and for sure not only the conrod gets destroyed if this happens. Don't try this at home...

Kind Regards,

Holm

Yep, didn't mean to suggest that it would be a good idea to do so.
