Evolution Engine sound's odd

I have just installed an Evolution .45 engine in a trainer...The engine was new in the box and never installed before although I understand that they are test runned at the factory and set up....Engine started by hand and ran smooth and quiet with that three bladed prop....after about 3 minutes I stop the engine and tested the prop nut , etc. after restarting I noticed a high pitched sound like metal to metal....The higher the rpm's the higher the pitch...I have no experience with bearings freezing up, etc but this has an odd sound...Could this be the problem since the engine has been in the box over a year and was factory runned and maybe not stored with after run oil....I really do not know...One other thing....I hand started this engine as it did not have the nose cone installed although it had the back plate for the nose cone...Could it cause a high pitch sound? Thanks..Richard

Check to make sure everything is tight on your airplane. Sounds to me like a rattling control pushrod, etc.
I have one model where the fiberglass pushrods are louder than the darned engine!

I will try that.....I am going to test the engine again today and will put a few drops of ARO in the carb while running....Yesterday after putting ARO in and then restarting it seems to take the sound away for about 30 seconds...If the oil continues to change the sound then the sound could be in the engine... thanks...

Pop the backplate off and look at the conrod. Turn the crank to get the piston about halfway up. then with a piece of wood in the exhaust port to hold the piston, rock the crank to see how much play you have. You might see the rod move up and down without the piston moving - loose wrist pin, or the crank might turn without the rod moving - loose big end bearing. Or you could have both.
When oil will quiet the engine momentarily it usually indicates a loose rod or wrist pin.
After you fix it, stay with fuel that has some castor oil.

Thanks...I will look into that....It being a new engine I hope there are no problems but will continue to work on this....Flew the airplane today with the Evolution engine and it seem to work fine and everyone at the field was checking it out for me...could not hear the same noise outside that I had heard under my carport...One man suggested that I may have been hearing a slight high pitch sound from the three bladed prop...He explained it to me but it was more than I could comprehend at the time...This engine was not putting out the rpm's or take off power that I was getting from my old Enya .40......But again it has only had 12 oz of fuel to date....I just expected it to be near broke in as advertised for that engine....

I continue to have problems with this evolution engine....I contacted Horizon Hobby and they will not help as I can not find proof of purchase although it is obvious that the engine is almost new....Four tanks of gas and it is hard to start, sounds like the bearings are shot and leaking oil at a high rate at the front. ( afterrun Oil )....Has anyone had these problems and have you found Horizon Hobby difficult to deal with...They are the only source that sells this engine and I purchased by at a R/c Airplane Show...new in the box....This may be a good reason to only purchase from our LHS and for darn sure do not lose the receipt either way....I am new to the sport and would be careful dealing with Horizon...They have not replied to my second email...That is a concern...

If you purchased the engine from a Horizon dealer, send it in with information on who you purchased the engine from and approximately when you purchased the engine. Or contact the hobby dealer and perhaps they can make a new copy of the receipt. If it was purchased from a person who is not a Horizon dealer, the warranty is non-transferable, meaning that if you purchased it from an individual, there is no warranty for the engine.

For warranty work to be performed the engine must be purchased directly through Horizon hobby or one of its dealers. Second hand equipment, etc does not have any warranty. The warranty is non-transferable. If you purchased the engine from a Horizon dealer your engine is under warranty. If not, it is not under warranty. We are the manufacturer of Evolution engines.
