I have the choice of either a super tigre 61 ringed engine or the ABC version.
Can someone explain the differences and what their preference would be. I am not conerned by the cost and all I have heard is that the ABC will have a bit more power, while the ringed engine may be a bit more reliable?
Help please

Laanguy,
The TBO (Time Between Overhauls) for an ABC engine is the longest, but a ringed engine is much cheaper to overhaul, given only the ring has to be replaced.
The ABC is usually more powerful, but I cannot tell you by how much.
ABC engines need a short, rich, two-cycle break-in, at running temperature. The ringed engines need a much colder, four-cycle rich initial break-in, with a rich, two-cycle continuation.

Frankly there is little difference between the 2.
ST quote .1 of a horsepower difference. Probably a couple of hundred rpm, with identical props.
What sort of model do you intend for the motor?
If it's a scale or semi scale with a cowl, probably the ringed version. If it's something that is going to tear up the sky, the ABC.
Also consider what Dar Zeelon has said about life span.

I've found that the ringed Tigres are more docile to handle while the ABC's seem to have a bit of a temper at times!
I've got experience with the X61 ABC, S61K ABC and two S90K rings, plus the S45K ABC and finally the G34 and G51 ringed engines. The Ringed engines are so smooth to operate and much easier to start. I'd not buy any of the two though, I'd go for the G-75 ring and get more power than the 61 ABC and the smooth handling of the ringed engine.

Just caught this post. Is that a 61FX or ringed ST you're running with a JE purple pipe in your Calypso pictured on their site?

All else being equal there's no difference in power between the two. Ringed engines are far more dirt tolerant (it's worth noting that most heli engines are ringed when their plank counterpart is ABC). As for TBO
I once replaced the rings in an Enya that had done many hundreds of hours because it was no longer reliably starting with one flick.
