THUNDER TIGER 42 PROBLEM!

Default THUNDER TIGER 42 PROBLEM!

Hi,
A few weeks ago I bought a new Thunder Tiger 42 from my local model shop as a second engine to my SC40, I was told to run a couple of tanks through it to allow it to 'run in' which I did, the problem is that the engine is still a bit tight but now refuses to start[], it is drawing fuel into the carb and several new OS 8 glowplugs have been fitted but the dammed thing still refuses, the fuel I am using is Model Technics Duraglo 5, has anyone got any idea's before I bin it.

I have one of these too. I don't have any trouble starting it, except when I flood it. I am not sure if flood is the right term, but I know the crank case if full of fuel. I get mine going by taking out the glow plug, unconnect the fuel line and the return presure line. Then I turn the plane upside down and run turn the motor with my starter. Be carefull the fuel will spray all over. Then I put the glow plug back in and start the motor. It still may take a little bit to get it going. Then I re-attach the fuel and preasure line.

I broke one of these in for a friend. It was a bugger. It was so tight that my starter didn't want to turn it over. Yes it did flood easily just as stated.
Use a good fresh glow igniter, try an idle bar plug, and follow the breakin proceedures for an ABC engine that have been laid out soooo many times in this forum.
Good News.. The engine after breakin ran great, started easily, and had quite a bit of power.

Does it fire and not run or not do anything?

RC engines are pretty simple machines. If you have fuel and a good glow plug, they will fire. Do this. Check your plug to see if it lights. Look in the air bleed hole on the front side of the carb. The screw should be half way across the hole. You may have to take your spinner off to see this. Turn your needle valve in and open it 2 turns.

Turn on your radio and open the carb, put your finger over it and choke it 3 turns. Then flip the prop over 6-8 times. Idle down. Hook up the glow plug and try to start. It should at least fire. If it does start, leave the battery hooked up until you adjust the needle valve.

Thunder Tigers usually take a long time to break in. This engine will last a long time. You just need to get the settings and the starting procedures down.

By the way, plain bearing engines are not designed to be started with an electric starter. The bearing is only designed to take forward thrust loads. Many times, using an electric starter will cause the crank pin to hit the rear cover, shaving off metal and leaving marks. Ball bearing engines will take loads in both directions.

Try warming up the motor with a hair drier, heat gun, etc. This will allow the motor to turn over more freely. Sometimes two washers under the glowplug will help. Todays motors are designed for using electric starters. Clearences are built into the design of the motors to allow thrust in both directions. That is why there is a steel washer washer behind the prop hub, to prevent wear when starting the motor. This is one fine motor once you get past the brake in difficulties.
