Default evolution trainer engine

Hello to all--- I have just bought a trainer plane with an evolution engine. I tried to get it started but failed. I just started this so there for I feel it is pilot error. I had a ton of fuel come out the top off the carburator. How is the best way to get one of these things started? Thank you

Sounds like it's just flooded.

I have an Evo trainer system and mine fired right up on the second flip. I don't know your experience level, so forgive me if I step on your toes.

On a flooded engine, I always close the high speed needle to prevent flow, open the throttle all the way, then hold the plane upside down as to let the excess fuel drain out of the carb opening as I flip the prop ~backwards~. When it stops dripping, right the plane and flip it or turn it a few seconds with an electric starter to blow out any remaining fuel. I realize that the Evo system will not allow you to close the needle, so you may want to disconnect the fuel line from the needle valve and somehow pinch it shut or get a buddy to pinch it shut while you have it upside down. Plan B would be to pump all of the fuel out of the tank, disconnect the fuel line, and turn the engine backwards. Don't try to start an engine that is obviously flooded- you can break something. Hold the nose skyward and let fuel that has collected in the muffler to drain out.

Assuming that you get the excess out, reconnect the fuel line and try to start it. The cylinder will probably still be "wet", but it may start. Try it with the high speed needle turned as far open [counterclockwise] as the limiter will allow. I always try to start them with a minimum of priming before I prime it with my finger on the carb as I slowly turn the prop. You need to take off the glow starter when you prime it with your finger over the carb! Since you are new, I HIGHLY recommend finding someone with some experience. An 11 inch prop at even 2,000 rpm can do some serious damage to your hand- and these little guys can turn 10,000+. Even an old salt can forget to take an ink pen out of his shirtpocket when starting an engine and a plastic pen falling into a spinning prop becomes several missiles in milliseconds. (Didn't happen to me). Other examples of bad things that can happen are:
you accidentally start it with too much throttle and it jumps forward at you
a tricycle gear trainer plane during taxi picks up a rock/walnut/pecan/glow starter and throws it and/or shatters a prop
it backfires and throws the prop (spinning) forward and OFF the plane
the classic case of sloppiness and you move your hand into the spinning prop
one guy on RCUniverse bought a prebuilt plane and the firewall broke off and sent the engine and prop at full throttle into his hand. There are pictures here somewhere of the damage- it was terrible.

If it sounds like I am trying to scare you, I am. Some people- most people- think that gas rc planes are toys. After seeing my college buddy get his main thumb muscle in his palm sliced wide open by a .40 I promised myself that I will never get sloppy.

ok, off soapbox.

The Evo system has worked perfectly for me on 10% fuel. Remember to start with a little prime before trying more priming. If you write and describe in detail things like : does it fire at all? does it rev and die in seconds? what glow-starter you are using, what prop size you have......

If you find someone with experience, he will fire that Evo up right away.

feel free to email me or post here with questions

Matt:

I disagree with only one thing Hatcher said. These things ARE toys. But toys can be dangerous.

Best advice? As he said, find someone to help you.

Bill.
