Default MDS 2.18 on FAI Fuel

I've been breaking in my new MDS 2.18 using Byron FAI fuel and running very rich. I've burned about a gallon of fuel with a TF PP 20x8 prop with an OS "F" plug. It appears to run very well, with a good idle and transition. If I lean it for peak rpm, it will turn 7400. Is this representative of what others are turning?

I'm just curious since this is my first large MDS.

That is about 400 rpm faster than my Zenoah G45 will turn a 20x8. If I can, I'm going to run a Just Engines carbon fiber laminated over wood 19x10 on my 2.18 tomorrow, here is a picture of the prop. It came perfectly balanced and remained so after I reamed it, when you tighten the prop bolt it does not give. That is obviously not the 2.18. The prop is very light in weight.

What size is that diesel? That looks like quite a prop, Hobbsy. I am very interested in hearing what rpm you get with the MDS.

So far, I'm impressed with the 2.18. It's easy to adjust, has a good idle, and great power!

That is a little Fox .15, just a little humor I placed in the Diesel forum.

MDS 2.18
Fox 5% nitro fuel with 20% all castor
H9 SuperPlug
Davis SoundMaster in cowl muffler, first time to run the engine with it, impressively quiet.
JustEngines 19/10 cf/wood combination prop---6,800 rpm
ProZinger 18x10-----------------------------------8,000
DynaThrust 20x6----------------------------------7,500
MasterAirscrew 16x10 three blade---------------8,100 just for fun.
I wanted to try a Mejslik 18x10 but the hole is too large and I couldn't scrounge anything to use as an adapter, unusual. If I can rig up the Mejslik, I will.

Hobbsy,

Those are pretty good looking numbers. I guess my 7400 on a PP 20x8 is pretty good. It will only get better since it only has 1 gallon through it.

Thanks again for the info.

Hello
Just purchased my first MDS 2.18. Are you running the radial engine mount? If so can you give me the outside dimensions on the mount?
Thanks in advance
Dan

As you can see it is set up to mount on its side, the mount is 4 inches wide at what will be the bottom and those holes are 3&7/16 inch apart, the mount is 4&1/16 from bottom to top, the holes in the upper corners are 2&11/16 inch from the bottom holes, the upper center hole is 1&3/8 from the outside upper holes.

I need help from "The MDS Guru". My son flys a 1.48. Transition sucks. Idles fine, top end fine. Seems to load up at midrange.Has C2 carb. We run 5% castor syn mix. Read a perry Vp-30 would help . Installed and flew today. Not much difference. Help! Any base settings you can suggest or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am breaking in my new 2.18 with a vp-30. Any suggestions on it would also help.
Thank you in advance once again
Dan

Hobbsy,

On a different note: how does the Just Engines laminated CF prop perform in the air when compared to let's say a Mejzlik CF and a Menz wood? Any useful info on that?

I want to know, why is it everyone is unwilling to run the larger MDS Engines on anything higher than 5% nitro.
Afraid of the high compression of the engine ? Has anyone tried it, what happened ?
