I want a really fast plane, would this work? Does it have throttle? What kind of pipe, prop, plug? How much, if any, nitro? I am new to high speed, and am building a plane out of fiberglass to take this power. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Hans

Noisy, scary, fast, not for the faint hearted! A factory carb and pipe is available. It is an FAI pylon motor so designed to run on 80:20 fuel. Also available cheaper elsewhere...

Thanks for the reply. What does 80/20 mean? Where's a good place to buy? Finally, are there any other engines with this kind of performance for a similar price? Thanks, Hans

I really wouldn't advise getting an engine like that until you've got WAY more experience with high performance engines. For one thing it needs a tuned pipe to get the power they mention. You'd be much better off starting with something like a Rossi, Jett or the more normal MVVS. There's a learning curve for everything we do and you can't expect to go to the top of the curve just by spending money. Don't be put off though, keep it as something to aim for.
Here's a start on the upward climb of that curve. The 80/20 fuel means they're designed to run only on what's called FAI fuel which by regulation is 80% methanol and 20% castor oil (synthetics are not allowed).

Please don't take this personally, but I would have to be a little FIRM on you about running this motor. If you don't know what this motor set up is, then you don't have enough flying fast experience to handle this type of power and speed. I'm saying this from my personal experience with this engine and as a Pylon Racer and would like to recommend something else to you. Like a Sport Jett .40-.50 on any Quickie 500 airframe or an ARF call Predator from Lanier. This should give you enough speed 140-150mph (and it idle) which should satify (or scare you) your needs for speed.

If you still wanted to know and run the .40 FAI engine... Then by all means get someone with Pylon Racing experience to help you out.

Here are some of the info. that I can assist you with this engine...

1. No! This engine doesn't have throttle. It has a Ventury Wide Open at full power and only way to stop it is shut-off switch by control linkage

2. This engine must be run with a Tuned Pipe (supplied) with the reading of about 24-25,000 RPM with 7.5x7-7.5 Carbon Fiber prop on the ground (it will unload in the air to about 30,000 RPM). As for the glow plug, use a McCoy #9. It has been the best I've found for this engine (and many others). I've run this engine with 8x7 prop and 15% Nitro with good result. However, RPM reading was less, a little over 22,000 RPM on the ground. But when it unloaded in the air, it's a missle (about 200mph)

3. Engine was set up for FAI fuel with no Nitro, but 5% would work just fine (actually better). If you use with higher Nitro such and 15% then head shim must be added.

Last, but not least... Be very safe with this, not only to yourself, but others when flying this type of fast plane. Also, have someone with Pylon Racing experience to help out. And make sure any plane you build must have Carbon Fiber in the wing. Hope this help.

Thanks for the replies, I will take your advice and start with something like a sport Jett. I see 40s 45s 50s, etc. What is the differences, other than size, weight, and maybe a little horsepower? I am thinking of reliability, price, etc. Right now my fastest plane is the Tower Hobbies Uproar. I have been flying it a couple of years and I want to sacrifice aerobatics for speed. I dont like arf airplanes, is there a nice quickie 500 kit that you would reccomend, preferably built up balsa wing? Thanks Hans

As for Jett Engines... It's just the diference in size and power. And for Reliability and Power, there's no engine's better, period.

A matter fact, I've just spend $400.00 today for a new BSE Quickie .40 AAC. Gotta love speed, huh? It cost a whole lot.
