Default what engine is better?

Hey everyone i need some help picking the right engine for my next plane.

I plan on getting a Hanger 9 p-51 miss America as soon as i get the money for it. But i don't know what engine will be best for it. I have heard of people putting to big of an engine in a plane and messing up the cowel ( I don't want that). I was leaning toward a OS .65 LA or a Saito .91 for the nose. I just want a good engine that is not going to over power the plane but be able to pull the plane trough what ever I throw at it. Has anyone else had success with these engines?

Saito 100's and Super Tiger G90's should be fine.

Enjoy,

Jim

When I built the Miss America for the RCU Magazine review, I was originally going to use an OS 91. It was installed, and the cowl was cut to fit it.

Then I got a scale exhaust stack from KeLeo Creations that only fit a Saito 100 (Which is the same size as a Saito 91)

I had to make the hole in the bottom of the cowl considerably larger to accomodate the Saito, and the Saito does show through the bottom of the cowl a bit more than the OS did.

Given a choice between a Saito 91 or an OS 60LA, I would definitly go with the Saito. It doesn't stick out a whole lot, (As you can see in the photos) and the Miss A just crys out for a 4-stroke

Enjoy,

I will second Jim's recommendations. Both good choices.

A TT .61pro may be a good choice if you are looking to save a few $$

Forget about the 60LA.

Whoa there Bob, I have an OS LA .65 and consider it to be an excellent engine, it made a very respectable showing in the .6o sized engine shoot out in one of the mags did a while a back. I sure wish people wouldn't make blanket statements like that, they don't prove much.

It's like this jg, pick your horse and ride. If that plane was mine it would get a Saito 100 with no other choice even close.

Not intended as a blanket statement. The LA65 is an ok engine. Runs well. I simply suggested other alternatives I believe are better suited for the aircraft.

Considering the project involved, and my experience with the aircraft and engines....... I do not believe the LA 65 (60) is a good choice for the H9 P-51. The aircraft performs best, in all aspects of flight, with larger diameter props - in the 13" to 14" range.

My experience with more than one LA65 was that it was not as happy turning a 13x6 as it was running on 12" blades. The peformance of an LA65, on a similiar aircraft with a 13x6, which was ok, provide me with some real time feel for such a combination. Personally, I found the performance a bit low for the bird. The aircraft owner was disappointed as well, and eventually replace the engine with a ST75.

Thus my recommendations for engines that I suggested - based on better experiences with those.

Perhaps there are others with better peformance results. I will not dispute those. Just providing my personal recommendation.

And, if I had to pick one engine... I'd agree. Saito 100. Excellent match.

I am awaiting a Diesel head for mine and anticipating a 13x8 three blade in the high 8's to low 9's.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I will get a Saito just because I have heard better things about it then the .65 LA. don't get me wrong I would like to save a little $$ and get the .65 but Saito seams to scream more dependable. I still don't know if I will get the .91 or the 1.00 size. And I am not in that big of a hurry to get it but thank you all for your help.

The 65LA will be dependable.... But it would never occur to me to run that engine on anything but a trainer (just my preference-) here is why: I always overpower my airplanes- it is just too easy to get "75-90" performance in a 60 case/weight! There is no downside since they are lighter than ever before... 60's are becoming the red-headed step child since 46-53 's are getting stronger and 75+ are about the same weight as the 60's yet have more disp. and power---

Say I have an airplane that "calls" for a 60 2 cy. engine, I look at the high-end 60's (Jett, Rossi, YS etc.) or I move up to a Tower-75 ($99-), Jett-90, ST-75 or G-90. Do you really want a warbird that is under-powered? (Consequently I would not fly a warbird with anything other than a 4 stroker, sounds too good and you need to swing bigger lumber on those birds---

Try a search for this airplane and see what folks are running and how they perform! While the OS-65LA is an OK engine (Think 60 sized trainers with Master Airscrew props. [X(]) I think the Saito-100 is one of the best options mentioned thus far, with a YS-1.10, YS-91, and Saito 91 close behind- (The 1.10 is the best and most powerful but is expensive at $335-)

Cheers!

I have a Hanger 9 Mustang with the Saito 1.00. It is an excellent combo. In fact, if you look at the Horizon ads for the plane, this is what they recommend. Others in my club fly this Mustang with YS .91s and YS 1.10s. Some of you guys are so hung up on OS engines you don't make any sense...a .65LA in a .60 size P-51...drink some more coffee!

Dave,

This prop size at 9,000 RPM is a very respectable output of 1.48 HP.

This is more than Dave Gierke got in the shootout, as well as being at a much lower RPM.

Tell us what you finally get.
Will it be a DDD head, or one from AJC?

Saito 100 all the way!! Even between Saito 91 and 100. The 100 is the same size and weight as the 91 with a bit more snort. You can get the trick exhaust too. Go with the top of the line 4 cycle instead of the middle line 2 cycle. If the $280 price tag is too much, keep an eye on the rc universe marketplace. Often you can get these 100's new in box for $240.
