ok, have the TH .40 ABC
You all are going to think I'm crazy but...
What if you were to put (like a muscle car's BLOWER) on an airplanes carb. What if I came up with an idea to have a bigger carb intake (on a car: throttle body intake).
.................------.
................|_ .....| <--- directed intake(air enters and is forced down into...
...................|.....|
...................|.....| <--- ...shaft intake leads down into carb intake)
What if I put a plate on the back of the carb intake so that air would be directed into carb.
Would this give my engine more power?? I'd probably have to set more rich huh? And I'd probably need to make my muffler more free flowing.
TY for all help!!!!

Its been done. The OS supercharged 120 four stroke is one example. It would do what you want, but the gain may not be worth the weight penalty. Also, where would you find one to fit a model engine?

That would probably work. I have read however, that you can actually go too big on the throat diameter - ie the throat is so big that airflow through the carb is not fast enough to properly draw fuel.

A ram air intake. Might work, but I'd bet that the gains would be minimal. Also the ram effect may be much greater in flight requiring an extra rich ground setting.
If you really want more power, the simplest ways to do it are:
1. more nitro
or
2. improved exhaust, ie. a tuned muffler (performance specialties etc) or tuned pipe.
Oh, and make sure you are running a prop that lets the engine spin up into its powerband (ie. around 14k-16k on many .40 size engines)

A tuned exhaust is THE best and easiest way to get more power out of your engine(a good bit more). Try an Ultra Thrust or a Jett muffler. There is also mousse can mufflers that you can buy or make that work as well or better.
If your looking for ultra high performance it's best to get an engine that was made for that kind of performance.

1Jimbo is quite right...a tuned exhaust is by far the best way to go for more power. If you're after the maximum then forget about the so-called pretuned pipes, there's no such thing. For normal flying a wide band pipe is the most suitable because it'll operate over a somewhat larger rev range although not giving quite as much boost. It's also much easier to dial in.
As for the carb mod, you're talking about a ram air scoop like what some high performance cars use. Mainly all they do is pick up cool air from outside the engine bay and we don't have that problem
Nearly all carbs nowadays are more than big enough to handle 16-17K revs, in fact they're so large that muffler pressure is needed to help get fuel through.

Since were using cars as examples, there IS such a thing as being over-carbed. Also keep in mind the feul delivery issues with the 'big throttle body' idea. A larger throttle body will have lower velocity air flowing over the venturi.

Thanks guys!

yeah, LS1s turn me on...
If only I had an LS6 in the beast!
ohh well... most LS1s will run around 12 seconds and under...no other engine has done that just stock
beauties!

I have a 1971 440 GTX.
Only headders and intake
It cranks out 425 HP with a 850 Holley

for carbs BIGGER in NOT BETTER
No jlb00h you are not retarded. The first thing most guys do for hot rodding is bolt on the BIGGEST carb. MISTAKE.
Nothing like a 850 cfm on a stock 350 chev.
