I am thinking of getting back to this hobby and i am now deciding wether i should go with a Petro or Nitro powered boat/plane ?
I was wondering if there are any ARR or ARF kits for Petro both boats and Planes?
I like the idea of the Petro since it doesn't seem like there is much tuning involved to get my brothers PETRO truck and my buddies PETRO buggy to run well plus fuel for Petro is everywhere
I am just wondering if the upkeep on a NITRO will equal to the value of a PETRO engine?
We also have a NITRO buggy and there are times it is soo mooody to run it right like the temperature outside needs to be perfect, break in needs to be perfect or it won't run for *****, glow plugs, and it seems like they are more sensitive and would require a rebuild soon.
Since i am new to Petro i have posted this in that forum too and i hope with a bit of replies from the veterans will help me decide what to buy next PETRO OR GAS then it will be boat or plane HAHA....

You only burn half as much gasoline as alcohol type fuels.
Here's a boat... http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDP58&P=7
Enjoy,
Jim

what size plane and budget are you looking at? petro is generally more expensive overall. (yeah the fuel is cheaper, but the plane you put it on isn't, as well as the extra cost for the engine)
petro engines are somewhat easier to run, they generally don't need needle tweaking all the time, and assuming mag ignition, you don't need any extra batteries to start it. glow engines aren't much of a problem if you understand how to break it in and tune it correctly, they will run just as well as a petro. glow engines are FAR ahead of a gasoline engine as far as power/weight, at least until you get up into the really big ones.

thanks.... i may actually consider a nitro plane.
Which ARF plane kit will be great for tricks and low speed flying? I like the Funtana, and i was wondering what motor would go well with that plane. IS there any othe rplane you guys reccomend that is similar size or a tad bigger so it is easier on my eyes while the plane is in the sky.
Thanks

If you are willing to build. Some of the best performing planes out there are Paul Swanson's designs. I have had a Burrito and hope to someday get a Mojo, he also has a .60 sized mojo.

MadGTI,
At a certain point in time, this forum was inaptly named 'Nitro Engines'.
This changed to 'Glow Engines', since:
1. Nitromethane is a minority ingredient in the fuel glow engines use; even those that use high percentages don't exceed 30%, with methanol being the overwhelming majority ingredient (except in special racing classes, which are less than 1/1,000 of the modelers).
About half the operators of these engines (not in North America) use no nitro at all, in their fuels.
2. The one property that completely unifies all these engines is the glow plug.
3. Nothing in common between us and 'Top Fuel Dragsters'...
The term 'Petro' is not used by many either; just say 'gas'...

GTI,
So does nitroglycerin...
Gas is not, it's actually a liquid....
Well, when you say 'glow engine', no one in the hobby would think you are talking about something else. When you say 'nitro', some may think you are talking about another type of engine... Even in North America.
So, a Diesel can only be a Diesel (a compression ignition engine, actually) and a glow engine is just that. A petrol engine is a gasoline engine, in other parts of the world, but 'petro' sounds like a partial, misspelled name of a type of dinosaur...
It is better to use terms that we all understand unequivocally.

thanks for clarify the types of fuels
Typically how long does a glow engine last? 1 year , 2 year, 3 year, 5 gallon, 6 gallon fuel ?
I never rebuilt a glow engine yet so i was wondering how much $ is involved in a do it yoruself rebuild asa first timer and maybe what tools i need?

a glow engine that is treated well lasts a LONG, LONG time! many gallons, 10 at a minumum with many going well over 30. glow engines in rc cars usually are rebuilt after a couple gallons, but they tend to abuse the engines much more then a plane does
