The old ST twin is pretty rare. They were a good strong engine, the biggest problem was overheating one cylinder. If you got it rich enough not to overheat the one, the other was blubbering from being too rich.
The cure was making a special back plate for the rear cylinder, increasing the rear crank case volume to be the same as the front case. Once this was done the uneven misxture distribution was corrected, all was well.

I've got a Twin 60 that I was considering for a big Mustang because it will fit completely concealed inside the cowl, but now I'm worried after hearing of the heat problem...
How can I tell what vintage mine is? Did the later version have this backplate fix installed or some other improvement factory installed? Are there any readily available fixes or info on exactly what needs to be done?
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!!!

Run the engine on a test board and see if you can get it set up without one cylinder running too hot.
You can run it for a bit and shut it down and see which cylinder is smoking or just quickly feel of the fins while it is running?
Some engine like the later ones or an old one that has been fixed will run just fine.
