Hi all from Ontario Canada. You think you have it rough , try -34 C. I think today I will stay in and work on a better way to hang balance weight off my Saito engine mounts. Something easy to adjust for different planes, any ideas ?

Come on, PJ, -34C is nothing. Try driving your airplane along at 75,000 feet and having the cabin heater fail.

Bill,

When I got out of the Army in'74 I rebelled by taking an auto body grinder to my army boots. I was never, ever gonna shine those suckers again!

I think you have been out long enough now, that you can end your rebellion and finally get a haircut and shave.

Haw!!

I know it's cold in the Eastern North American Continent today But this is drifting farther away from Saito's. Beards and combat boots has nothing to do with model airplanes

Get back to model engines. -jim

OK,
I'm going out to the cold, cold garage to start to disassemble my 1.00 to change the bearings.
Any advice before I start the disassembly?
(Bill, is cringing as he reads this thinking "man, what new way is that guy going to find to screw that thing up?)

Now Jim, all this has everything to do with Saito engines - the climate in which we run them, and personal toilette (whether or not to shave) before running them.

Personal well-being is extremely important to their enjoyment.

Haw.

I suppose you've changed bearings in a model engine before?

I'm full of advice but won't offer unless I know if there is a problem?

Have nearly completed a brand "E" 60 4 stroke...about worried Bill to death over it.
Have done quite a few 2 strokes.
This will be the first time I've disassembled a Saito.

Best advice is don't be a fool. Do the job in the kitchen, not the garage. If you spread newspapers on the table your wife wont fuss too much.

I'd say crank up the space heater? (This is mildly on-topic, right? -- re: disassembly steps ...)

I've just acquired an old 45S, and some parts are either not listed from Horizon Hobby, or just flat-out not available. (Bill -- thanks for the older manual -- looks like the intake manifold is common between the 45S and a 50).

The 45S rear cover has a single attachment point for the carb assembly. Apparently that was a real weak point. Someone in our club had a 45S that broke there as well. It looks like the rear cover from a 50 or 56 may work, but those have the two hole carb mount. I can fabricate a part to adapt the new style cover to the existing carb, but would like to ask for anyone's help in confirming that the newer rear covers would fit. Finally, I assume the new covers are plastic, and have no nipple, so I would have to drill and tap into the crankcase body for the nipple?

I can call Horizon on Monday, but wouldn't mind just ordering the newer parts today if I knew they are sized the same.

Thanks.

For the 50 you can get a metal rear cover with, or without, the vent. There are no plastic ones except for the 72 and 82.

Enjoy,

Jim

I purchased a 91 from a guy to put in my Funtana 40. It starts right up and seems to run great all through the range. I haven't gotten a chance to fly the plane yet. Is there any tips I need to know about this engine? Are there different versions of the 91. Thanks

Rob:

The FA-91 is the FA-91. No production changes that I know of from the first, with the exception of a carb upgrade a few years ago. If yours runs fine it either has it or doesn't need it.

Make sure the valves are adjusted properly (0.002" clearance) and you are running the low speed mixture only rich enough to answer the throttle well. With the LS too rich the engine will still run fine, but the fuel rate will make you unhappy both with the cost and short flights.

Thanks Bill. It runs so good now I hate to mess with it but I will heed you advice and check it out.
The reason I asked about different versions is that the muffler is the straight type and not the newer type.

There are two different 91s' in a way. The old ones had a shorter crankshaft. They also had a cast boss on the left hand side of the head for use in a twin application. I have three of these older ones. They run just as good as the latest model. The crankshafts are interchangeable. The short crankshafts were still available until recently. Don't know who would want one?

Its sometimes hard to use the Saito lock nut on the short crankshafts.

The mufflers are inter-changeable as long as you use the complete unit.

Enjoy,

Jim

Thanks for the info Jim. Well, it's a perfectly sunny day here. Not a cloud in the sky..........but 30-40 mph winds.........ARRRGGGHHH......[>:]

Oh! By the way. I heard that you can use a Saito 100 muffler on the 72 and that will make it run better. Is that true?

You may gain 50 or 75 rpm. Fuel draw may become a problem depending on your plane and your flying habits.

I'm in Auburn, AL today. It's 39 degrees, drizzle, and breezy

Enjoy,

Jim

Thanks, Jim. Forgot about the shorter shafts.

Bob:

Another 100 rpm? On a 6" pitch prop that will add less than 1/2 mph to your air speed. Do you think it's worth it? I don't.

Jim,

Thanks for the info on the rear covers for the 50. I just finished grinding off the remaining chunk of the broken carb support, leaving the cover nice and smooth. Then it dawned on me that I could just fabricate a carb bracket and attach via one of the cover screws, or maybe two of them, for added support.

New question: The engine did not come with a prop nut, and I tried a 7mm (from my 82), and it was too big. I tried a 1/4-28, and it started to thread on, and stopped. Is it perhaps another metric size, maybe 6mm? There is precious little data around on the 45S, so I appreciate any help provided! I could go to the hardware store to check size, but thought I'd poll the club first!

Gary:

If youors has the metal throttle lever then the flat end of the LS should be flush to a hair down. If plastic approximately 1/16" below the face of the lever.

Thanks Bill -- just searched and found a Dubro aluminum prop nut in 6mm, hadn't seen that size before.
