I just purchased a GP Super Skybolt. Looks like an awesome flyer. I'm still pondering on what engine I want to put into it. I never had a 4 stroke before and I'm leaning more towards a 4 for this plane. Anyone have any experience with this plane and 4 strokes? I was thinking either an OS 1.2 or a Saito .91. Any suggestions?

I put a Saito 1.80 in mine. It will sustain vertical at 1/2 throttle and really move vertical at full! Lots of fun, but definately overpowered. FYI, I still had to add a bit of noseweight in mine, so that's not a factor.

I'm getting a lot of feedback of people using Saito 120 and 180's. How was the fitting of the 180? any customization on the cowl and whatnot?

180is 2mm taller and mounts in the same dimensions as the 120. I was going to us a .91 in mine since I have it laying around. I hope to not have the tail heavy problems this plane seems to have when I build though.

Aren't you guys having problems with ground clearance? I was using a 15x6 when I had a 1.20 four stroke in mine and really had to get a nice three point landing so that the prop wouldn't touch. Now I am using a .90 2 stroke, not as powerfull but still a great match for this plane and the 14 inch prop never touches the ground.

three bladers are the answer ... you don't loose as much performance as some would have you believe, and they look real cool.
Ali spinners for 3 bladers at a reasonable price can be found at Cermark.
3 blade props are expensive though ...

No. It balanced perfect with battery in plan location using the GP adjustable 60-120 mount. A few flying tips. NEVER try to stretch a glide in. It will drop pretty quickly due to drag on landing, plan for it. It will not tip stall but just drops like a brick when it stalls. Try an inverted flat spin it does a great one. Oh a 14-7 3 blade MA also works pretty well with the 120 for a little more ground clearance

From: Ravensdale, WA,
I recently finished a Skybolt using the Saito 120. Extremely smooth flier since first flight. Nothing better than a four stroke in a biplane. Couldn't be happier other than the prop clearance. Started with a 15-8. After that flight I switched to a 14-10. Flies excellent and faster than I expected. I've experienced the stall mentioned by smallfry, it's not a big concern, but something to be aware of. I used a Dubro soft mount with none of the spacers provided in the kit. I also had to add weight to the nose. Enjoy.
