I'll have to take a look, but I think the DuraTrax engine might be an O.S.? (could be wrong...and I'll edit this statement if I have to after I check it out )
I do know that the DuraTrax monster truck ( the Warhead ) I looked at the other day has an engine made by Supertigre, the G27CX (how 'bout that one Jim?!
)
edit: yep...the DTX .18 is made by O.S. so, you wouldn't be gaining anything by "changing" engines.
Check out the car and truck forums and see what some of the popular replacement/upgrade engines are...
Good luck

Gymnast,
Whichever engine you select, do the break-in of your next one, using the method described [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/Tapered%2DBore_Engine_Break%2Din_%2D_Upgraded/m_1850473/tm.htm]here[/link].
In a couple of threads, modelers that run car engines, wrote their engines last about three times as long, before needing a rebuild, when using this method, rather than the "extra rich" break-in the hobby shops "recommend"...

My Feedback: (6)
I have a Duratrax Torq 16 engine with about 20 gallons through it. My kids punish the snot out of that poor engine. I think it is a good one since I have had yet to replace anything but the recoil pull starter assembly. Another good one is the Fantom.
