Default asp xls 52 is great, really!

hi, I have now had my asp xls 52 airborne and must say it is great. Stunning power and trottles great. I could idle on strong headwind and stand almost still then wack the trottle and full elevator and rocket vertically, cool. I flew alongside a buddy with the same plane and prop, but he had a os 46 fx and was totally blown away. he doesn`t even have unlimited vertical. I have tached my 52 to 13300 on the 12.25-3.75 and my os 61 fx only gives 13100 on the same prop. also on the apc 13-6 the 52 manages 10700 and my sc 91 fs gives 10400 on the same prop.I don`t understand all the bad talk of this engine. Maybe I got a really good one?? Plus I can buy a spare engine and still have money left in my pocket instead of buying the os 46 fx.

Hi,

I have two of these ASP 52 engines: they are very good performers - powerful, start and handle very easily. I have not seen anything better under a 61 size.

As to reliability - I ran one throughout one year and gave it some serious abuse, from temperatures in the high 30s C down to sub zero it was great, never failed to start or needed anything replacing - and not even OS...

Bodge.have you done any modifying on the muffler and have you any tach readings on your engines?

Same basic engine as the Magnum XLS 52 I think. There is a huge thread on that engine here. Hopefully the rich midrange/deadstick problem is resolved. Most said it had "scary power!" Mine did, but it was an early one that would only run with the low speed needle nearly shut, and still was rich in transition.

I think asmund may need a new tach? Some of those readings do not seem right.

yeah I know, I`ve been reading all about this engine.I believe that sc xls 52,magnum xls 52 and asp xls 52 is the same engine. The magnum just have that fancy blue head. Anyways I think they have resorted the midrange/ deadstick problem on recent engines. I cant get mine to deadstick even if I try. Idle is low and steady at 1700-1800 rpm with the 12.25 prop, transition is good and power is on par with rossi 53. Starts with just a twist on the spinner too.No need to starve to get the overpriced impotent os 46 anymore

sport pilot. my tachometer works fine. I have verified it against other brands. If you read my second post here you`ll see that I ask bodge if he has altered his muffler in any way, cuz I have and would like to compare readings against a bone stock engine

sport pilot. Maybe that comparison to the sc 91 fs made you skeptical, but remember that fs stands for four stroke, a 91 two stroke would of course crush these numbers, and there is no doubth that the xls 52 is stronger than the 61 fx. I own both, plus it is 4 ounces lighter too

asmund,
Are you using the super quiet muffler, or is it modified? If peak power is important for you then you can put a flatdisk tuned pipe on your engine like I did on my Irvine 53.

My Irvine 53 on a Purple pipe (flatdisk fourchamber quiet pipe) turns a APC13x4W at 12600 and the APC13x6@11500-12000rpm.

ASP/SC/MAGNUM fourstrokes are usually not very strong engines so the 10400rpm on a 13x6 sounds right to me.

Wow, your gonna get whacked for having too many RPMs. I was bragging about my Tower 75 & got severely cuffed around the ears.

flyer95. I have removed the baffle and drilled out the outlet to the max, so the stinger is really thin in the wall. where can I find this purple pipe?? peak power is what it is all about I`m about to order a couple of tower mufflers. I read people reporting of 13800 rpm on the 12.25 apc with this tower muffler on the 52 xls

britbrat. I`ll try to take it like a man I keep reading all the time that these engines will deliver around 12800 in stock form on the 12.25 apc and 13800 with the tower muffler, so it should not be so unbelievable for mine to get to 13300. I have been reading that tread on the tower 75 and that made me really want on for myself

As it turns out my tach probably was telling lies -- it is now as dead as a rock. [] I will replace it & come back & brag with some reliable numbers. -- as soon as the snow goes. My Dragon had a fit about all of the exhaust smoke in the garage -- it got into the house. Doh -- I left the door open a crack [:@]

asmund,
You can buy them at Just Engines in England. They are also very fast to reply to emails and I like that.
I use the 60/90 pipe instead of the 40/53 pipe but Paul at JE said it will not give me more power just a deeper sound which I like and it only weights 20gr (0,7oz) more. They also have the pipe header for the engines.

Here is the link,

hi asmund
its sounds like you got real lucky with a gem like that. BUT be warned ive had a few ASP's (which i think for the money, are great) and they will lean out if you make them too lean, so what you should proabably consider, to(of course its none of my buisness what you do, do) prolong the engine life is tune it to peak then richen it by about 500 rpm you'll have a little less power but the engine will last you much longer.
best regards to all
James

ok thanks for the tip. I fly mine at 200-300 rpm rich and think that it is great. Time will show if its to lean in the long run, frankly I dont care, I like the power it has now and will just rebuild or buy a new engine when this wears out. The best about these engines is they are dirt cheap

Yes, I've heard lots of stories about rich midrange, but never experienced it with this engine. It IS very sensitive on the idle needle - 1/8th of turn makes a noriceable difference; other than that it throttles up fine.

I don't have tach readings that I can remember with certainty - I have fitted them on many different models - but 12,400 on a Zinger 12 x 4 sounds familiar.

I have never run these engines on anything other than 5% nitro.

Another point about these engines is that they use the OS standard exhaust and carb fittings for the 40 - 50(ish) range.

I buy them as "short engines" from Just Engines because I just don't need any more carbs and silencers of that size. They work out very cheap that way.

The ASP 52 is claimed to be a "long stroke" motor - it certainly sounds and performs okay with a 13 x 4 wideblade. I would not be inclined to over rev with a small prop.

on the apc 13-4 (not wide) I get 12400 rpm on 15/15 fuel. I will try some faI fuel tomorrow to see if I lose much power

Yeah, I meant to say 12,400 on a Zinger 12 x 6 on 5%.

The figures vary a lot - 2 - 300 rpm, depending on the weather though - that's why I don't bother remembering all the readings.

I use a super quiet silencer mostly, with the baffle removed. It does not seem to make any more noise without the baffle on the larger props that I tend to use.

Hmmm... It might have been a 12 x4 at that...

A flying buddy has an ASP .52 and he flies it hard. He's actually on his second one now (first one replaced under warranty).

They are certainly a powerful engine with quite a margin more power than your typical .46. On 15/18 Omega fuel, my buddy's one did 13,300 with the APC 12.25 x 3.75 prop running a Tower muffler, which is consistent with Asmund's readings. Most good .46s run at around 12 - 12.3k with that prop.

There are two issues with that engine if you run them hard. The OEM Chinese rear bearings are likely to suffer a cage failure and the crank, which is pretty thin where the intake channel is machined into it, can break at that point.

Otherwise, based on the two I've seen, they've been pretty good engines with lots of power.

Thanks Harry. People seem to think my tach is broken whenever I publish my readings Bearings I dont mind to replace, but what you wrote about the crank worries me. Maybe I should put on a 13-4 to lower the rpm a bit? I run the crap out of mine on the 12.25 and go full throttle until the tank is dry.In vertical dives at full trottle the rpm sounds scary high I`ve been thinking to order the tower muffler, but it seem like mine modified muffler is just as good at 13300 on the 12.25. Was that the top rpm on your buddy`s engine or was it richened a bit for flying at that point?

That was peak revs - going for glory.

He would typically richen it by 300-400 rpm for flying
