Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of these engines? Would they be suitable for hovering? I ran across an article of one and have went to their webpage (www.rcvengines.com) and am interested.

One of the guys in our club has one in a war bird. Runs great, makes good power, sounds like an International Harvesting machine. Hover? I don't think that's the idea behind this engine.

dylyon,
What kind of warbird does your friend have the RCV engine in? I am considering putting one in a TF P-51 and using a scale 4 blade prop. Any additional info you our your fried can give me would be great.

I believe it is a Sea Fury 60 size. I believe he is using the 60 size RCV. It flies it very well. I'll get more info tomorrow or next Sat. when I see him at the field.

Majes, I have the .90 version of the RCV to put on my Bruce Tharpe FlyinKing, it was noisy and ran terrible for the first 1/2 hour then magically the gear whine went away and and it smoothed out. Part of the smoothness came from changing the plug from the OS-f to a Hangar Nine Super Plug. The Super Plug also made it idle better, after about one hour I tried an OS-f, a Fox Miracle plug and the H9 Super Plug, the Super plug was still better at idle, with all three it would turn an APC 15x12 four blade at 5,000 rpm, on WildCat Premium Extra 10%. A friend of mine flew his 120 RCV after only 12 OZ. of fuel were put through it, it took this in stride.

djlyon,
Thanks, any info you can provide will be great. I'd be expecially interested in how he routed the exhaust.
Hobbsy,
Excellent info, thanks. I'm considering the 90 for by P-51. 4 blades at 5k sounds too cool.

Turns out it's a Global Sky Raider that weights about 5 1/2 ls. It is a RCV60. He's using a 15 1/2 D/ 13 P prop. The engine turns it about 5200 to 5300 rpm. he's using an OS8 or F plug and it does have idle problems, drops rpm as soon as the battery is removed. He's going to try Hobbsy's Hanger 9 super plug. The engine tows the plane around with good authority.

djlyon,
Thanks for the details. I remember reading on the RCV web site that they recommend using remote glow power. Though they sight safety as re reason, maybe they are really recommending remote on-board glow power to help with the idle.

Just rec'd my brand new 120 RCV. It will be mounted in an Ultimate Biplane Carl Goldber ARF ( when it arrives)
Information on props for this combo would be appreciated. I am not an accomplished acrobat
and have no interest in 3d.
Comments please.

Actually, with the ability to turn large props slowly, it ought to be an ideal hovering/3D engine. You gain a boatload of efficiency. It's why a properly geared/propped electic will fly, and fly well, on a lot less raw Horsepower than the same plane with a glow engine.
