Default Cox .15 (Really!)

Does anyone know anything about a Cox 15? It looks like a regular nitro engine ie... large aluminum case, rear exaust with about a 3 inch long header turned up at a slight angle. It takes a special glow plug which the guy that gave me this engine gave me a bag full of glow plugs also.
It has "Cox 15" cast in the side.
It also has a pressure tap in the back plate.

I can't find anyone around here that knows any thing about them and I was wondering if I could remove the venturi and install a small carb instead to make it R/C.

Thanks

Charles the Cox Conquest .15 was a pretty impressive engine a few years back. Can,t tell you much about it since I was not a user but I can tell you RJL has proprietary rights currantly and have produced new batchs periodically. Don,t have the website at hand but but they advertise in most mags frequently and are located in Duarte, Ca. Not sure but the engine may have a throttle carb available.

Default Yes, really -

I believe they were part of Cox's "MEDALLION" series, and a most desired hot engine. Lots used in free flight. I also think that I remember someone reproducing them again.

I wouldn't mess with an R/C carb, it will probably have more value if left as is.

Hang tight; let's see who else can contribute something.

I've got a problem with the needle valve, the thumb screw is broken off flush with the valve tube. That is the reason I was considering putting a carb on it. If you are right John, I will give RJL a call and see if I can get a replacement.
Yes Jim, It is a "Hot" engine! My friend started it once and it scared the #@$* out of him! The needle valve is broken off at just the right point for it to run slightly on the rich side.

these are great little engines, and were used quite a bit for QM15 racing a few years back.

RJL / Mecoa is now selling these engines, and have replacement parts available. I have two of them, and they are screamers. I have a carb on one, and a venturi on the other.

I'll give Them a call Monday and see if I can get parts. The guy that gave me the engine also gave me a stilleto mustang ,all fiberglass, to go with it. I can't wait to get this combination together.

Thanks for all of the help guys, I'll post pictures of the little plane plane when it's finished......

It's a Cox Conquest .15. Now called the RJL .15.
It's one of my alltime favorite engines. It should turn 25k plus with the competition head and minipipe. (6 5/8x3 or 7x3 prop. This isn't your garden variety .15, it has more power than most .25's. It's rated for upto 70% nitro. You can probably find an RC carb for it at Mecoa as they still have some parts.

Wish it had been me that got it.

I have a conquest .15 . VERY hot little engine. If it is not the RJL knock-off take extra care of the bearings, been looking for set for mine for a year now. Maybe find some oneday. these things are little screamers. And these guys are right it will eat most .25 for lunch.

The Cox Conquest 15 was a very high performance racing engine used in Quarter Midget pylon racing. Initialy there was an idle rule in this event so the engine had a carburetor. The engine did not idle very well on the racing props we used (7 x 5). The idle rule was dropped and a straight venturi was then used. The engine was then an all out racing engine using high nitro. Whether your engine will idle well is sometghing you will have to experiment with. I seem to remember they had a perry carb at the time. I also remember a gentleman by the name of Glen Dye was the reworker of choice. This is going back a few years.

How would this little gem compare to the Norvel .15 on a Sig Wonder? The cost of the Norvel is around $55.
Just curious.

I was planing on putting a Perry carb on it. I'm not a fan of "Fire it up - Let it go". I kind'a like having a carb in case it needs to come down.
It's going on a West Coast Model Products Stilleto P-51.
The plane is all fiberglass and foam and weighs nothing......
I figure I'll have my hands full with this.

If you do locate a carb source, will you let us know here ? I have 5 of these engines and needs carbs for 2 of them. I use them in combat and they take a beating sometimes. The carb is either a Perry or a Perry look alike. Plastic. Mine have a habit of shearing off upon impact.

when I used to race quarter midget we would have a fuel shut off which was a J shaped wire hooked to the throttle servo that pulled back on the fuel line and pinch it off and kill the motor. I had good time with those cox engines, but then the nelsons came along and cleaned up and that was that.
