Hello, I searched all over the forums for an operating temperature, but everyone seems to know it.

I got the os .50 hyper and it idles at 150F. what is too hot and what is the operating temperature? I am also running this in a heli.

Getting above 300Fis getting too hot

As w8ye said over 300F is getting too hot and my Hyper 50 in the Raptor runs between 190 and 210 on 30 percent fuel when properly tuned. You can comfortably hold your finger on the backplate immediately after landing from hover for about 3 to 5 seconds. (engine still idling) If you can hold it on longer it is probably too rich, less it is probably too lean but that is not written in stone. It is more of a get you in the ballpark type thing. It takes a little patience and it helps to have an experienced heli pilot to show you how to get it tuned just right. Good Luck getting her dialed in. [8D]

The hottest place is usually on the exhaust side of the glow plug on the head.

If you're concerned about temperatures then I'd assume you're more used to cars where it's used too much to get a tune instead of by ear. So long as you're using a correct fuel with adequate oil (the important part of fuel) then an engine will run at whatever temp it has if it's got no obstruction to the cooling air. Checking the temperature on the backplate doesn't indicate anything because you can touch a backplate at full throttle and it'll be cool all day long but it'll warm up slowly back at idle as heat soaks down from the cylinder. The bottom end of an engine is kept cool by the fresh intake of air and the evaporation of the fuel.

So, where are these numbers coming from?
