Filling W/sand is the hard way, but unless you have a tubing bender W/the proper bend radius & tube size your SOL. Speaking as a journeyman pipefitter & tubing bender.

I don't think the crinkles will make any real difference to the efficiency given that the pipe diameter will be rather big. I have lengths of 11mm I/d stainless flexi pipe on my 400 and I noticed no drop in power compared to straight headers

The link won't work. Use this: http://www.exhaustpartsuk.com/images/SDC17849_1.JPG

The folds are supposed to provide some noise attenuation. The Saito flex pipes are fragile. A ring collector would provide more physical support if you could fabricate one.

Hmmm........

I just had a thought. I recall, from working on full scale radial engines, that the exhaust collectors were fabricated from many short pieces that were welded together. Sooooooo.......

I think using 1" tube, it might be easier to bend short sections, without kinking it, and then just brazing the pieces together. It would mean a lot of waste, because a short bent section would be sawn out of a longer piece. But copper commands a fair penny at the scrapyard.

Yep - considered that approach too, Tom.

Might actually work out ok if I can get my hands on a few copper 'elbows' - if they make them for around 1" diam tube connections...

ok guys, i guess its time to spill the beans. I am no longer a member of this brotherhood. I sold my second and last fs400 radial this week and i carried it to the post office with a slight fainted heart.

the reason I sold it arrived today. I have bought myself a lovely wooden box for the money (plus a couple of euros on top of that).

I am still servicing these engines if need be but currently I "only" have the evo 7-77 which is making me very happy.

Hi Rev

Let me guess: it's a Kolm multicyl. engine?

...on another note - just got me some 1" copper pipe and some 90 deg elbow/joiners... and 5% silver braizing rods.

Plan is to open the 90 deg joiners out to 72 deg so that 5 of them with short sections of 1" straight tube should form a pentagonal circle. By the look of it so far, the internal surfaces should be pretty smooth and almost be a circle.

I'll post up some pics as I go.

Could turn out ugly-as and completely unfunctional... or it might just work

You might be able to use 1" X 1" X 3/8" "T"s on the straight sections for your primary tubes.

What - and maybe run the exhaust headers directly into the 3/8 of the T?

Hmm... might be an idea (would have saved me about 40 bucks - I bought 1m of 25mm (1") and 1m of 10mm straight pipe for around $20 per length. A store down the road had annealed 1" on a coil - 60 dollars a metre

Nera mind - got something to play with this arvo

Yowsa!!

There's quite a gap in the 90 deg elbow once you open it out to 72 deg

Looks like I'll have to find something to fill the gap neatly.

Maybe I should have started with 45 deg elbow, and cut&shut a piece out.

Oh well, I'm committed now...

Yes, it is a Kolm box. Although it is not a multi-cyl I am very happy with my first EZ50...

Cant wait to put it in the ESM Zero!

Ok... so I think I may have cut the trial-run elbow a bit too deep - it opened up quite a bit gap when I stretched the angle from 90 deg to ~72 deg. Not sure a gap that big is going to be all that easy to fill.

Soooo... I tried a much smaller cut - more of a knick than a deep cut. I noticed that it tended to stretch the elbow more at the ends than a proper stretch across the middle of the elbow.

Meh - so long as I get a half reasonable Pentagon out of it

It would make more power with methanol.

How about notching a 45° el & closing it up to make 72°?
