power for sig se

Would a saito 56 be a good engine to bolt on a sig se? Or would you go with a os 70? I am a novice flyer but would like to have enough power as i progress. I am also concerned with prop clearence and weight issues. Any responce would be appreciated.

I have a Se with a Saito 56. Flies very well. Not excessive power, but plenty when you need it. If you are a hot dog flyer wanting to rip the wings off, put the 70 on it and be sure to brace the tail. Then let it go and hover all day. But I guarentee you wont be disapointed with the 56.

I'm flying a SE with the OS 70. Seems just about right, plenty of power, unlimited vertical, knife-edge at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, high rates are awesome. Can you tell I like this airplane? Others I've talked to with smaller (read lighter) engines have had to add lot of weight. Prop clearance can be a problem. Also...as you are probably aware this is NOT a beginner's airplane. It's ok as a second or third however.

I have been flying mine recently with at Saito 72. Excellent combo, light, powerful, unlimited vert., etc. I put medium size TNT gear on so that I could swing a 13" prop.

excuse me for my lack of knowledge, but is this the Sig Something Extra you are talking about? Sig se. If so what size is it? I thought they only made the .40 in this model.

Gsheperd...Yep...just the 40. Seems like most of the flyers here are devoted to 3D flight, and if your plane won't 'hover at 1/2 throttle' you are underpowered. Well, I have seen the SE fly with the added drag and weight of floats (20 oz. + drag) powered by a couple different 46 2 strokers (OS FX and TT Pro). Flies great. It's a terrific platform, but be honest with yourself when you buy the powerplant...Good Luck All.

Will hover at a little over half throttle with a webra 50,mounted my battery behind the wing in the fuselage.Friend uses a TT 46 and has plenty of power to hover also.TT makes a premium engine for the price and they are very durable and not as finicky to adjust like my webra.This plane is designed with a 2 cycle in mind and the lighter it is the slower it will go,and it will fly slooow.

was... I have a sig se on the way and was planning to put a .46fx on it, but after reading this I may go bigger. This is only my second airplane and I will probably ease into it. Saying that would you suggest the smaller engine or should I just go big to start, so I will have it when I am ready for it. also what about size and weight of the bigger engines? is simply moving the battery enough or are you having to add weight in the tail. thanks for suggestions

Have one also with a magnum 91 but is to much weight in the plane nose. It sure have power for hovering but that is all I can get, no flat spins or other 3d maneuver and the landing gear
have to be change for prop clearence. If I have to pick another engine for the SE I think I will choose from a light .50 2stroke,
saito .72 or a YS .63.

I,m telling you this plane rocks with a webra speed 50.Its the perfect set-up.I use a bolly 11.5/5prop.It will go vertical like a jet and do almost everything in the book.it takes full rudder to get a decent knife edge but my next one will have a few mods to fix that problem(not enough side area stock).

u know putting a .91 in the SIG Something Extra is really pointless when it can hover adn 3d with an os 70 surpass... Here are some engines that will make your plane do 3d, ys 45 (pressurized fuel pump), rossi 45 (though heavy), webra 50, now for 4 strokes i would go with 2 engines, either the saito .56 or .72 or the ys .63. Any of these engines will make this plane hover! or do any manuever this plane is capable of... my 2 cents and if you want some cheaper engine, a TT .46 pro with a tuned macs pipe or a Super Tigre 50...

I have a os .61fx ,it weighs in at 23.6 oz with muffler, is this too much nose weight for the se? prop clearence is only about 1/2 in with no mods yet. Anyone out there put a 61fx on this plane?

If built light, the 46 should hover without a problem when you get to that point. Putting on a V8 in a pinto isn't always the best combination when learning to drive. I'd say save your $$ and go with the OS. You wont be disapointed. MHO

Thank you all for the information. After reading all responces I decided to go with the os46fx. Money was a factor and my flying skills were also considered. I have the engine installed and everything ready to go. Will let you know how things went .

I have a Sig SE and I went and ordered an Irvine .53 motor. It's the same size as the .46 OS, and even uses the same mounting holes. If you change out the muffler (with a .46 OS I might add) it's the exact same weight and size. You can pick up one of these for around $100 -120 dollars from www.justengines.org. These huge motors that people are putting on their engines are just way too big (and ugly). The plane is designed for a .45 or so engine. the .53 is absolutely perfect because it's the same size. With a good 11.6 or 11.7 prop, the thing is a screamer. No need to change out the landing gear on this
