I have an evolution 52 in my mustang. The engine is about a year old and has typically run fine aside from making more of a mess on the airplane to clean up than other engines I have seen. Recently the engine is burning fuel at about twice the rate it used to. No leak in the gas tank or anywhere else I can see on the aircraft butI am deadsticking in after about 6 minutes of flying. Any ideas? Also does anyone else have a problem with that engine making such a mess? I removed the pin allowing me to make full adjustments to the mixture and though the engine sounds fine, what a mess. It is also coming out from under the cowling whcih is obviously unusual......Thanks for any input. Jim

First, put in a hot plug like an A3 to see if it will burn the fuel more efficiently. The OS 8 is too cold.
Second, readjust your low speed until it idles for longer than 30 seconds and will take a reasonably advanced throttle without stumbling or wheezing. Then, peak your highspeed needle.
I bet there is a good chance that your engine always sounds cold when cranking and first advancing the throttle. This is a common characteristic of Evolution glow engines with OS 8 plugs.
