Engine cleaning question
For those of you who have used the antifreeze in the crock pot method for cleaning your engines, do you need to dissasemble the engine into pieces? I know you have to remove the carb because of the o-ring and seals, but what about the rest of the engine, ie bearings, rings, etc. If you cover the holes (carb/glow plug) will the antifreeze damage any of the engine internals if it seeps in? The hot antifreeze really does a nice job of loosening up all the gummy castor residue and makes it easier to disassemble further, so yea, just pull the carb and any plastic rubber bit that you don't have replacements for and dunk the sucker with the glow plug and backplate removed.
If you're hesitant to use antifreeze and a dedicated crock pot, then Dawn Power Dissolver is your next best bet... I've used both methods and it's pretty much down to whether or not I can get the engine apart - if it's stuck or gummy with dried castor oil, I'll just remove what I can and drop it in the antifreeze. If I can disassemble the engine then I use the Dawn.
Either method works well, but both require a certain level of safety precautions... The antifreeze is a poison and the Dawn is a caustic chemical. [:'(]

I really wouldn't trust anything but breaking it all down and using a stainless steel brush over everything and a good hot soapy scrub, and a clean rub with a towel to see if the towel picks up any dirt.
I've tried to clean whole assemblies before in the crock pot and just like it was mentioned it is good at helping take things apart but cant really be trusted in my opinion to just rinse and use.
