Default Tower Muffler mods

Has anyone played with shortening the muffler body on the Tower muffler? I read somewhere that a fellow had cut the "tube" part of it down to try to improve the midrange.

If you shorten the muffler it will shift the engine's peak power higher in the rpm range. You can pretty much rule out 11 inch props then. However, if you want to run a bigger than "normal" prop you would want to lengthen the muffler. Wouldn't be hard to turn out an extension for the tubular piece on a small lathe.
