Alright, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have a Cox TD .051 that I purchased new back in '92. Was a lovely little engine and would easily turn 25G. Was wanting to put this on a Sig Hummer, but unfortunately my storage unit was flooded about 3 years ago which included this engine. I wasn't able to get to it and inspect until well after the flood subsided, after which the damage was done. Cyliner, piston, and rod are extensively corroded with rust (in fact, the con-rod broke after trying to loose it up with penetrating oil). I've literally tore apart the internet search engines, looked on here, and spent about 5 hours trying to locate someone who might have what I need. Does anyone out there know where to send me? I'd hate to have to throw this little thing in the rubbish. Thanks in advance for your replies and help. I love this little engine!

There should be lots of answers in the 1/2A forum. There are guys that have spares. I know there is a site that has a lot of the old Cox engines. I just can not remember where it is right now.

These people bought up all the old Cox engines and parts and stuff here.

They still show some cylinder and piston/rod sets for .049's. Fortunately, you can run most any .049 cylinder and piston on the TeeDee case. I did a few times many years ago. Granted with a regular .049 cylinder/piston, you don't have the extra power and speed.

The TD 049 and 051 were designed to have exactly the same power output so you could fly the same F/F airplane in two classes (1/2A and A) without re trimming the airplane. There are several places that have TD 049 piston and cylinders. Any of the Cox 049 piston and cylinder engines with the dual bypass will work fine.

Orbit, obviously I need educated somewhat and perhaps I'm a little ignorant. You mentioned dual-bypass...exactly what is that? Thanks to all so far,

If you can't find what you want here in RCU's Marketplace, look in that famous auction site...
Skaliwag, Kittingittogether, Xenalook, Coxmania, Engine049 are a few to look for...(sorry if I forgot a few of you guys...)

Inside the cylinder are one or two passages that allow the fuel mixture to go from the crankcase up into the cylinder. They are opposite the exhaust ports. The babe Bee 049 and other "low power" reed engines have one. The higher power TD's have two. Other Cox 049's have two also. They will all work on the TD051 Case with the same power.

Orbit,
I have to respectfully disagree with your statement
The TD 049 and 051 were designed to have exactly the same power output... The Cox TeeDee .051 turns a prop about 1500 to 2000 rpms faster than its smaller TeeDee .049 brother (This are numbers based on my own experience, using cox 5X3 2 blade props with 25% Nitro fuel).
muzzlemagot, you can pm me and I will see If I can find a NIB set of Piston/Rod/Cylinder I might be able to sell you.

I have a few of each, and to be honest can't tell the difference in performance between them, a good example of a .049 will out perform a .051 and vice versa. Later manufactured cox seemed to have more variation in performance within the same engine type.

Then you had a strong 051 or a weak 049. Cox designed both those engines with the same power so they could be used on the same airplane in two different events. I know as I flew those events back in the sixties on Goldberg's Blazer and 1/2A Viking free flight airplanes and on a 1/2A Starduster. Holland Hornet and Atwood also made 049's and 051's for the same reason. Atwood also made a .49 and .51 to fly in class B and C with the same plane.
I still have several of each on 1/2A C/L airplanes.
Cox also made the 051 red with a small groove in the piston so they could be easily told apart so they wouldn't be used in the wrong event. Holland Hornet made the drive washers a different color for the same reason.
Any free flighter can tell you this.
You can get a Piston/cylinder and glow head for $9.95 at this link. coxengines.ca/product.php?productid=121&cat=4&page=1 or just go to www.coxengines.ca

[link]http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/cox_frameset.htm[/link] go to technical information.
This will show you the types of transfer ports used by Cox. TD's had the largest area milled out with two bypass ports and four boost ports. I think later versions might not of had 4 boost ports....perhaps only two....but I don't know that for sure.

Lookie what I found while wading through "the Bay" this morning - check out item# 380164109450
That's if you have to have the .051 piston (although a piston/cylinder set from just about any Cox .049/.051 would get ya running).
