New OS 46FX Problems?
I just bought an OS 46FX "NIB" from someone on this forum.
It looks OK, BUT when I turn it over by hand without a glow plug instlalled, there are clicking sounds at top dead center. Also with the piston top dead center, the crank can be turned about 5 degrees with no piston movement-just clicking sounds. These sound very much what I imagine a rod or wrist pin slop.
How ever, when I put the glow plug in (how long have they been selling incomplete engnes?), the engine sounds just fine when I flip the prop.
I have not put fuel in or tried to start it.
Do I have a problem, or is this normal for this engine?
Any ideas?
Thanks

It's not a good idea to turn a cold, brand new engine over by hand. The click is the slop in the crank, but this is normal. Flush it out, oil it up, and break it in. Then have fun. Enjoy!

New OS 46FX Problems?
yes.. it is normal.. if you are that worried take the backplate off and check that piston is fully seated on the pin.. i take my new engines apart when i take them out of the box only because when i got my os .50, i ran it then the next tank it wouldnt run at all. and when i took it apart, there was a length of fuel tubing all chewed up thruout the motor which killed the glow plug.. but most motors are notchy at top dead center....

New OS 46FX Problems?
This is normal with ABx engines. Because of the pinch near the top the piston can't quite make it as far as it normally will when hot and running. This loads up the bushes at the top and bottom of the conrod and in fact compresses the conrod slightly. When you turn the crankshaft a little further all this strain gets released and you hear that click.
Putting the glow plug in and flicking it gives compression on top of the piston which pushes the piston back down so you don't notice that pinch.
As rsieminski said, it's bad practise to slowly turn over a new ABx engine before it's got some decent oil in it. The oil that's in it when new isn't there to lubricate, it's just to stop any rusting. Because there's an interference fit at the top there's more than enough time for any oil to get squeezed out when turned over slowly. Then you have metal to metal contact and the piston could be damaged.

Thanks for all the replies.
I did oil the engine before turning it.
All I have to do now is find a glow plug!! I'm still having a hard time with that marketing decision.
Thanks again.

Normal...
Robinr767,
I hope you did not follow the break-in instructions that came with your engine...
They were admitted, by OS' Bill Baxter, to be generically written for ringed engines and wrong.
This engine type (tapered bore; ABN in this case) must not be run four-cycle rich, while being broken-in.
Read this thread:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...59&forumid=145
Also read the OS Engines direct support forum in RCU.
The "freedom" you feel at TDC is normal and results from the intentional con-rod/wrist-pin/piston oil clearances, engineered by the engine manufacturer. It is even greater at BDC, but the lack of "pinch" there prevents you from feeling it.
Sincerely,,

New OS 46FX Problems?
Dar,
Thanks for the headsup on the break in.
How is it that a manufacturer can not suppy proper instructions for their product?
Are there some OS reps on this board that would like to speak to this subject?
Thanks again to all.

OS Reps...
Robinr767,
You can speak with Bill Baxter.
He is the manager of Futaba USA, the importer of OS Engines to the USA.
He is here:

New OS 46FX Problems?
Dar,
Here is a copy of my E-mail to Bill Baxtor.
---------------------------------------------------
Hi Bill,
1. May I please have your comments as to why, according to several folks on the RCUniverse board, the OS 46FX is shipped with break-in instructions that will harm the engine.
2. May I please have OS instructions on proper break-in procedure.
3. Is the rod/crank slop that is evident with piston at TDC normal without plug installed?
4. I've been out of the hobby for a while. I just bought what is probably my fifth or so OS engine. What in the world is OS thinking by selling engine without a glow plug? I believe in using OEM parts, but now I have to question the wisdom of this. The manufacturing cost a glow plug surely cannot be greater than the loss of customer contentment with the product. I will probably try other plugs recommended by others.
You may wish to look at my thread on RC Universe.
Thanks.
Robin
