I don't know of anyone using solenoid starters on RC aircraft. Solenoids are used on automobile starters to move a gear to engage the starter motor gear to the engine flywheel.

Solenoids are used in automobiles so you don't have to run a 6 gauge wire to an ignition switch/key. There are usually two of them...one to engage the starter pinion, and the other to activate the first

How come you want to use a solenoid?

I have a 24 volt starter motor. with 24v. the switch fuses together.
I use two 12 v. batteries, one activates the solenoid and both batteries (24v) runs the
starter moter.
This method allows me to start all my engines .60, 914c, 1204c, and my Quadra 40.
I am going to make some diagrams and some pictures later

A friend was using a Big Hobbico starter on 24V on his Saito 220 and it welded the original switch contacts shut.

LiPo batteries are lighter. 2 cell LiPos are 7.4v, or a single 4-cell (14.8v) would do the trick and weigh a LOT less than two 12v7A lead acid or lead calcium batteries.

The gear reduction starter the fellow sells on RCU for $140.00 is a good buy, brought one and replaced the 11.1 lipo with a 14.8 and it cranks my 180 Saito fine

Chuck- I went through the same thing like you are. This is the best answer that SrTelemaster150 sent us:

The Sears price is about $60 which means this is a sale item. I paid that for my 650 amp and this one is the 950 amp. You use a/c to recharge it. It weighs half of what a lawn & garden battery does. And it turns the Dynatron over like you wouldn't believe. It's loafing when it turns over my Saito 125. No more lugging around batteries for me, and I can use it for jump starting cars, lawn mowers, etc too.
