RE: All Time Favorite Engine
O.S. .50 FSR, and .46 SF, both still going strong, the .50 very smooth and powerful! The .46 I have had since 89-90. The .50 I bought off of Ebay a few years ago, I am hooked, FSR's Rule! LOL
Great Thread, so much knowledge and experience here, Keep it up guys! |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
I really liked the old Webra .61 Blackhead motors.......they were really sweet running engines.
|
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
It's really hard to pick a favorite.
Enya 41-4c This has been a sweet running engine from the first tank. It's not the most powerful, but it's so smooth running. YS91 - A kitten at idle and a fire breathing monster at full throttle. I don't even see why they put a needle on this thing as I never have to touch it. K&B sportster .20 My first rc engine....sentimental OS 46FX- I bought this well used engine on a well used plane. I figured I would just replace it whenever it wore out. Three years and planes later, I'm starting to wonder if it will. |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
I have an old os40fp that came with a five year old piper cub that i brought second hand the wngine still runs great 2 years later and although a little short in power is ultra reliable :D

RE: All Time Favorite Engine
OS25 FP. I have two of them, bought in the late 60s. Both still running strong and I don't baby them. especially in a Pizza Box. The other is in my Bushwacker which is my avatar.

RE: All Time Favorite Engine
46FX. I was just thinking today that I fly with no fear at all of engine failure. It doesn't even enter my mind. That's how good this engine is. I've flown it in 90+ temperatures and 20 degree temperatures. It just starts and runs great. I can't imagine flying and having to dink around with your engine all the time. That would suck.

RE: All Time Favorite Engine
My simjet 2300 turbine :-)
but otherwise, my old OS-25FP NEVER had any problems with this little gem . SJ. |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
I was kinda surprised that there weren't many O/S lovers out there....oh well.
My favorite is an O/S .15 Max. Thing runs like a dream. It's on an old Kyosho Cardinal 10 (discontinued) and outperforms all my planes...put together. I'm expecting a lot of mumbling here...but my next favorite engine is an MDS .68. I used to have a Fox .60 on this particular plane and it ran like crap. In fact, I bought TWO Fox engines and both were awful. I switched to the MDS and it has never failed me. I believe most of us get used to 1-2 brands and stick with them. I've never touched a YS, Tiger, GMS, Tower Hobbies, Magnum or gas engine...(yet). |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
YarSmytheJr,
Once you do try a YS 2 or 4 stroke, You'll be hooked and not wanting to use the lower powered options! |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
My favorite engines by size:
<.40 Norvel .46 TT or Mecoa .60 size: MDS .58 or MDS .68 .91 4 stroke: TT .91 Large 2 stroke : MDS 1.48 Large 4 stroke: Saito 1.50 or 1.80 |

[I buy engines because I LIKE THEM. I don't care what anyone else thinks]
I'm with you Race! There seems to be a bit of follow the leader as to engine selection in this hobby nowdays. I think these fellows miss a lot of enjoyment by not trying something different. I have a number of engines that may well never fly. I just enjoy taking them apart, "playing" with them and running them. I feel the same about motor cycles too but the model engines are easier to store and a WHOLE lot cheaper! |

BTW-waddayalike MVVS 45/49 out there..? Woody 51-you agree I know..! I have got one .49 and one .45 and these engines also combine good top end performance with excellent throttling. My .49 fitted with a larger 9mm bore OS 7B carb(no pump) still have a tickover so slow it is almost unreal. MVVS is a VERY good bargain in my view and further the MVVS exhaust manifolds are compatible with OS40/45 FSR engine exhaust stacks(post #67)....some synergy..!..............Cheers/Harald |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
Shoot me, but I like the (1) O.S. 91FX. Power to weight is great!
(2) 1.60FX Pulls hard, easy on fuel. (3) .46FX Just keeps on going like the pink bunny. |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
Oh and my favorite two stroke is th HB 61 PDP ! Great engine at any price . Good usable power over a wide operating range. Very durable and reliable .
Still overall the YS 53 and the 91 are tied for first . They don't need "seniority " . They have already put in enough horsepwer hours for me. The other thing is I keep catching myself grinning in sheer delight as I watch them perform . AMAZING engines [8D] |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
Saito 91 FS must be my favourite. It allways starts like a turn key car starts, using the starter. It has amazing torque for its weight. And it SOUNDS like an engine, not like a kitchen mixer like most of the 2-strokes do.:)

RE: All Time Favorite Engine
*********************************** Fox .35 ***********************************
My first big engine from back in the days when a $15.95 Fox and a $6.95 Nobler put you at the pinnacle of the hobby. After it sat idle for 35 years, I bored out the venturi a little and JB Welded a Fox .15 carb in it for throttle control. It turned a Zinger 12/4 at 7500 rpm. Not bad for a 7 oz. engine. Put the Fox in the 1/6 Sig Cub. It performed beautifully and loudly. Come to think of it, my Fox .35 never gave me one moments miserey, unlike some other engines I have that have been pure torture. |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
Early HP .40 smooth head engine. Got my first one in the mid '70's and put it on one of the first ARF's ever offered. That thing was the very next thing to a brick, but that screaming old HP got it off the ground and would pull it around right smartly. Couldn't land any way but VERY fast. Worst airplane I ever saw but probably the best engine. Found another a couple years ago and bought it although I had to pay waaaaaay too much for it and it is also a screamer. As well as running well the engines are gorgeous. Almost looks like some kind of chrome alloy on the outside of the engine and the inside is just as attractive.

RE: All Time Favorite Engine
OK, a good running engine that starts reliably and runs without fail (to me) is more important than raw power.
That's cause I go to the field to fly, not mess around with an engine. SOOOO.... OS 40fp. light, easy, quiet, enough power, although barely. I once heard another flyer boast: "I've only had to flip my fp 40 twice, Once in ten years..." Why'd they go and start making the LA, and why did tower quit making it too? |
RE: RE: All Time Favorite Engine
OK all,
I have to put my comment in here. You who have watched my posts know I have a soft spot in my head for multi cylinder engines, and multi engined airplanes. That out of the way, I'll still pick the Lee/Veco/K&B 61 ringed engine as the all-round best engine of all time. At least so far. Bill. |

ORIGINAL: Flyboy Dave ....someone assembled the motor "front to back".... which can be done. I'm not sure if it would run that way without a reversing crankshaft........ and then I'm not sure it would run.... ....lemme think about it.... :stupid: Dave. :) You only need the crankcase rotation to run clockwise or pusher props. In the good ol days the US MFGRS. would cut you a left-handed crankshaft. Alas, not anymore. I hate it because engines are now one piece crankcases or as Enya, just a bolt on front with no backplate. Only MVVS has the ability to turn around the cylinder so that one can build reasonable multi-engine models. My example of two Como (made by Super Tiger) .61s with slimline mufflers. Edited to stay in the confines of the thread: Super Tiger Blue Heads for RC and the Fox 40 for CL Stunt. After careful break-in it was just as good as my G. Aldrich Custom ST. 40 which was a well groomed jewel, just perfection. It definitely was NOT that daxx McCoy 40 ring that I demoed a pre-production at the '71 NATs and it kept me from making the top ten that year, my last year of CL stunt.[:@][:'(] |
RE: All Time Favorite Engine
McCoy Red Heads, the 19 was the first BIG engine we had in A Tomahawk control line. Today I like my OS four strokes, A 70 and A 120II and A 120III I would like to try A YS for the next four stroke I get.

RE: RE: All Time Favorite Engine
OS wankel 30. Drinks fuel but man what a runner. Still got mine. Every once in a while i put it on the test stand for my kids and crank it up.

RE: RE: All Time Favorite Engine
I love the reliablity of my OS 91 surpass ...... also used to like the good ole Fox .19 in my Eaglet 50 :)

RE: All Time Favorite Engine
70's Webra Speed .61. With the bendy spring, needle valve adjuster.
FAI fuel... it was a power blaster... And looked so damed good! The day I got it I remember holding, never putting it down. Somebody post a picture so I can remember back to the days of Garry Glitter and The Sweet... Even kissing Shonna McNab at a school dance. Happy Days! |
