Hi Guys,
I am getting to the point of moutning my aileron's on my 1/4 scale and the plans call for 1/4" down and 1/2" up travel on the aileron's. This seems to be too little of movement to me but this is also my 1st bipe with aileron's on both wings. I put anough angle on the leading edge of the aileron to get 1/2 of down travel, will this be enough travel or should I increase the angle to allow more down travel?
Later!!

Anthony,

You won't need much Down Aileron at all. Introducing very much in the way of down yields a ton of adverse yaw. 1/2" will be more than enough. What I would do, is to look at some of the photos of the full scale, and mimic the opening that you see there. It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Where are you mounting the actuator horn or ball for your aileron? The one driven by the servo?

I am going to mount a horn right at the bottom of the L/E of the aileron, I am going to use Robart horns and try to get the connection right over the hinge line. I will put as much angle on the L/E of the aileron as I can without ruining the looks and then set my throws accordingly on high rates, I will start with the recommended throws on the low rates and go from there.
I had thought about using a ball link and making a scale connection for the aileron's but decided against it for easy of use and I do not intend to compete with this plane.
Thanks!!

I am making some progress on the fuse panels, still have some more touch up to do with the spot potty.

I'm going with the Ball links and the scale connecting rod on mine. It should be a lot easier to set up, and by using the bellcrank, I'll be able to mount my servo's in a better location.

Anthony, you will need all the aileron you can get, the old Waco is a bit lazy on aileron. To get a bit of reaction from them a nudge of rudder may be needed, my 1/4 UPF has 50% aileron/rudder mix switched in all the time, even with 2:1 differential. That way I can use just a bit of rudder correction as needed, rather than having to lead with rudder and correct with aileron all the time. Fine for full size flying, but a bit of a pain for us lazy model pilots.

Very True, but remember, this plane was never designed to be an aerobatic airplane. Much less a contender for the X-treme 3-D championship. It should take a bit of rudder to wake the plane up and get it started around the roll axis. With a Waco, the rudder is definitely your friend.

Thanks for the tips,
I am used to flying with rudder, I have been flying a 1/4 scale C/W Cub for several years now and rudder is a must for a nice turn. I will set up as much throw in the Waco as I can but I will be flying the plane in a scale manner, nice slow barrel rolls and big loops and hammer heads will be the order of the day with the smoke rolling. I just want to make sure I have enough aileron authority to get myself out of trouble if I need it.

Anthony, I have flown mine in scale contests, (FAI) where along with a set of compulsory patterns you have to select another 6 or so for your flight. I tend to stay away from rolling maneuvers as any roll will be a barrel, it will take a long time, and it will lose lots of altitude. Any of the rudder/elevator ones (chandelles, lazy eights, stall turns, half cubans etc) work well, a big double stall turn at either end of the runway, great big lazy eights, with the crossover right out front and about 10' up will make you look good as the model, at this size, has enough inertia to cruise through the slow bits and will pick up enough energy on the down bits to manage the next up bit. You will be working hard on rudder, as the ailerons won't be helping much. The only way I can get mine to 'roll' without too much height loss, or running out of visibility before getting upright again, is to 'flick' it, ie at cruise speed raise the nose to 30deg or so, apply full power as it slows, smooth application of full up elevator and full rudder and aileron in the direction of the required roll. Hold everything until it's just about upright and let everything come smoothly back to neutral again. Get it right and it looks almost like a proper roll.Whatever you do remember that it is a lady, won't be hurried, and certainly won't do anything indelicate.

Waco Joe I missed getting to the AWC Fly-In, but looks like I'm going to make it to AirVenture 08. The guy who I was coming to CCA with religiously goes to OshKosh every year, and he has a spare seat. Let me know how to get in touch with you there.
I was looking in the British magazine New Scientist and it appears that they will be trying out Rocket powered racers similar to the Red Bull racing at OSKOSH.

These are just trials but if they are successful I predict more enthusiasm among the youngsters.

P.S. Have a good time, I wish I dared cross the pond.

Doing fine here just very busy with work,
I am getting back to working on my Waco tomorrow and I plan on putting 1/64" ply on the top wing center section to simulate the fuel tank, can anyone tell me the dsitance from the L/E to the fuel tank? I can not see from my pics where the fuel tank begins from the L/E.

Anthony,

On the FULL SIZE the tank sits between the spars and the tank top overlaps the spars and ribs about 1" to 1-1/2". The leading edge is sheeted with aluminum back to the forward spar. The Paul Matt YMF/UMF drawings indicate that this distance is about 5-1/2". The attached pic is of a YKS top wing (with out tank) to give you an idea on how it all fits. The YKS wing is constructed similar to the YMF wing.

John you are my hero as usual,
Everyone needs to stop in at the scratch build forum and see the pics of Ken's(Big_Bird) 1/4 Waco, he just posted pics and she sure does look good, I know how much hard work it took him to complete that beautiful plane.

I got to talk to Dick last night, and he is coming along very well. He is looking forward to returning to writing the column, and sounds really good. He is most appreciative of all the e-mails that you guys have been sending, and wants me to forward his thanks. He sounds like to old Dick.

Hi Brother and Sisterhood,

I celebrated my 72nd birthday yesterday, my wife took me out for a fancy dinner. While we were out I spoiled myself by buying a handful of the latest model mags.

I noticed a biplane on one cover but just chucked it into the bag to look at later. I cannot get away from that WACO, it's pursuing me saying "Build ME!"

I found I had bought a copy of RC Model World and the cover had a Waco YMF-5 picture with the words "Top Gun Close-up by Bob Gonzalez"

Some nice pictures of this 1/3 scale model, nearly as good as John (Skylark) has posted for us.

My complaint is that I have too many other projects without that damn Waco seducing me, Get thee behind me Satan! WACO!

Hahaha,
I know the feeling, I spent an afternoon looking throug this thread back in early January and couldn't stand it anymore and I just had to have one, I have a 87" Stearman all framed up and a Ziroli P-40 fuse all framed up begging for me to get back to work on them. My Waco is close to being finished and I need to decide which project to get back too. You best just give up and build the Waco or it will haunt you forever
BTW: Happy Birthday
Anthony
