Hi Anthony,

it is not only the prize but also quality which counts. Our 3D designed kits make the parts fit which builts up the model pretty fast.

Cheers
Peter
Hi Peter,
I know your quality is excellent as I am using your glass parts on my 25% Pepino design By the way the fit of all the glass parts was perfect for my plane. I meant to send you some pics.
Thanks!!

Default RE: WACO YMF

last yearI ended up with a waco YMF fully built from a pica kit.the original owner passed away .I havent done anything with it so far except to remove the os 120 installed and presumably flown on.its condition is very good but I was suprised at the amount of weight up front for balance.I am also skeptical of the gaps in the hinging for the tail surfaces.I was going to replace them and set them in to close the gap or I could simply seal the gaps or do nothing. there are no wheel pants on it .not surte he ever included them on the finished model but I certainly want to do so .I found a vendor where I can get them though I have no clue how to attach them after the fact.I also want to use my satio 150 as the power plant this time.he used a ton or so it seems anyway of paint and the plane weighes almost 13 pounds.it seems heavy for that scale.I havent flown bipes until recently when I flew my SE5A and love it.when its all said and done I want to restore this beautidul ship to a scale model or as best I can and be the envy at our field.I am amazed and coming to appreciate what I have after seeing the price of rare vintage pica kits. I would love to get any suggestions particularly about the wheelpants and engine power.I also have a satio 180 but thats flying my extra at the moment.

Cloudancer,

This won't ever be a 3-D airplane so don't worry too much about the hinge gaps. On some full scale airplanes from that era, you can stick your hand through the gaps in the control surfaces. As to the weight, it will be okay, so don't worry about it too much. It will be okay at that weight, or heavier. The model will be overpowered with a 150 or 180. The 120 flys it great. Remember, these planes fly on the wing, not on the prop. As to the wheel pants issue, use the Carl Goldberg mounts for the 3/16" wire gear, and the wheel pants that you can get from Stan's Fibertech or Fiberglass Specialists will work okay, but you need to section a 1/4" strip out of the center and epoxy them back together for them to look right. If you will look back through the thread, you can see a set of them with this process done.

To recap, don't worry about the hinge gaps, don't overpower, and the wheel pant issue is easy. Why not join the Brotherhood?

The pricing of the kits is now a non-issue. You can order the plans and templates from the AMA and cut your own kit at a reasonable price.

hi stick ..thanks for the encouragement ..I know the owner flew it and used the 120.I used that 120 in my SE5a and have a new 120 which I also inherited so it looks like I should go ahead and install it and not worry .I am pretty sure I have the 60 inch version but it is a nice looking model that anyone would love to have.I think he went crazy with paint is all.by the way we chated earlier as I visit leesburg .we have friends residing in the plantation development.I am going to be there in a month visiting .where are the club fields and better yet the hobby shops lol.

Bill, That is a nice small muffler. I have to ask you something I probably should know. You made the statement (these planes fly on the wing, not on the prop) I have heard that before Can you tell me what it means?

Thanks

Dan,

That old saw simply means that the plane uses the wings to generate their lift, and is pretty much a slow flyer, rather than one that is said to fly on the prop, and is normally a hot rod. Several come to mind, but someone will always feel that his ox is being gored. Let's just say that planes with small wing area's compared to total weight would come under this heading. Remember, the fifth scale Waco has nearly 1500 square inches of wing area. Many quarter scale and larger models don't come close to that number.

Check with Hobby Lobby, on Franklin Pike Circle in Brentwood Tennessee. They are a Graupner dealer, and can probably get you anything that Graupner sells.

I was first bitten by the Waco bug a couple summers ago when I got a ride in a full-scale ZPF over the Straits of Mackinac, Mackinac Island & the Mackinaw Bridge here in Michigan. You can check out this beautiful airplane at [link]http://www.carolinabarnstormers.com. I,ve been going back & forth between this fascinating thread and the Barth Waco thread for some time now trying to decide which Waco project I might want to undertake and I'm leaning heavily toward the Barth 1/4 scale, although I have a little more thinking to do on it.

In the meantime, how would I go about becoming a member of the Waco Brotherhood? Also I believe I read that at one time there were T-shirts available. Are these still available, and if so, how do I place my order?

Any commenets or help is much appreciated.

Mike

NEW BROTHER ALERT !!!

We have a new Brother. Let's all welcome Mike (Ekim) to the Brotherhood.

Mike, you are Brother #121.

As to the question about the shirts, We are trying to come up with enough orders to secure a reasonable price. I'm hoping that we can get to 144 shirts, so that we won't have to pay through the nose for them. We have orders for almost 70 of the shirts, so we are about halfway there. These are ultra high quality shirts, with outstanding printing/screening. They will be Maroon with gold printing. They feature the Waco Logo on the left breast, and have the Waco Brotherhood logo on the back (see my avitar). It states the Waco Brotherhood, and the Phoenix project in the circle surrounding the YMF in flight. They are unusually beautiful shirts. The last run was sold out immediately, and I don't know why this order is taking so long to be subscribed. We will keep on trying though. To order send me a pm stating your size and how many you would like. Last time they ran about $14.00 per shirt including shipping. I don't know what price increase that we are facing, although I would expect it to be minimal. Shipping has increased for most everything lately, so we will have to see where it is at order time. We are selling the shirts for exactly what they cost us, and we are not trying to profit from the Brotherhood.

Gentlemen.

A follow up to John ( Skylarkmk1 ) post No. 3674 regarding the use of dummy engines for model airplanes.
I talked to Mr. Daniel Brett, president of William Brothers Model Products a few days ago regarding a good scale 7 cylinder radial engine, and he said not until some time next year. So, we all need to get on the phone and keep on asking for it.
I mentioned to him I was a member of the WACO BROTHERHOOD, and I may have caught him at a bad time, but he said he was not familiar with the group, So let's keep on asking.
I am going to try to make mine from the P&W 9 cyl. Wasp engine, hopefully a little surgery and some massaging will result in a reasonable facsilile of one.

Angel,

There are several photos of my scale dummy engine (I used the cylinders from the Top Flight 9 cyl kit in fifth scale) and a hair spray can for the crankcase. I think it came out pretty neat. I will post another couple of shots here. It's pretty easy to do, and you will be far more proud of it than something that you bought.

Here is what the shirts will look like as well.

Hello all,

A big welcome to the new Brothers. Here's a link to RCU coverage of the monster plane event held last month if you havent seen it yet http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...rticle_id=1054

That's a great looking dummy engine. I would be nice if you could make a step by step on how you made it for those of us that has no idea.

Thanks for pointing out that the rivets I made with the glue drops were suppose to be screws. I tried heating the screw driver with not much success Tried to cut a slice to simulate a slot screw didn't like that ether so I sanded then all off back to square one are there any screws that are small enough to use with out over doing it? all suggestions will be appreciated.

Dan,

Go to the Cub Den http://www.thecubden.org/ He has some good ideas on making screws from glue. For real screws, try Micro Fasteners http://www.microfasteners.com/ They have some screws from 00 and up.

Pictures are from 1932 UBF NC 2091K
P1 Screws from around the front cockpit door, approximately 5/16" in head diameter. All screws on this plane are slotted.
P2 Screws and Dzus (sp?) Fastener (about ¾”) near the front cabane strut.

P3 Screws and smaller quick type fasteners around access hatch to rear of engine. Note the rivets on the cowl and screws used elswhere (phillips head on 1987 YMF Classic NC 14081). Black ring under cabane strut end is the extendable foot peg.
P4 Foot peg in use.

Dan,

Are you sure that you want to follow an old man's ramblings while doing such a build? As it happens, I need to make one for a good friend who I promised one to, so I can start building it this weekend. Things that you will need to build along: Top Flight 9 cylinder engine kit in the appropriate scale. Hair spray can (Freeze it makes a great one...get it at Wally World). 1/8" aluminum tubing, 1/8" and 1/16" Brass tubing, scrap balsa, about 2 feet of wire. glue, paint, and a little time.
