RE: WACO YMF
Dan,
Your engine looks absolutly great, what did you use for the spark plugs? What diameter wire will you use?
Bill,
I am marking your posts down so I can try and re-create the engine from the photos you posted. You made it look so easy,
maybe even I can replicate it.

You mention the "NC" number, so I assume you are modelling an older era. My guess for the correct placement would be wings and V tail. FAA no longer issues NC, NX, NR, or NL numbers. If the original number included any of these combinations, they may still be displayed in accordance with FAR Part 45.22

Bill,
You made it easy for me your a great teacher.Should finish it up tomorrow and will post pic.
Jim,
I used 1/8 and 1/16 tubing for the spark plugs. The only wire I could find small enough was telephone wire. It's real easy and fun to build Just make sure when you vent the can of hair spray do it outside I did it in my garage and made a mess [:@]and one last thing don't tell your wife you punctured the can with a nail my wife had a fit with me (go figure)

ffdq-
The FAR I mentioned is so dang confusing (written in usual gov't-speak) that I couldn't make much out of it. Do a search for "FAA registration number location" and it will give you a list of sites that you might find something on. The regs talk about the proper sizes for the numbers if placed on the V tail or fuse side, but I couldn't find anything on the wing number sizes. Look at these two pics of an original YMF and an original SRE. The YMF # can barely be seen on the bottom of the wing. These numbers look like a different color from the trim scallops (the scallops are blue, I believe the numbers are black). There is also NC14081 that you can see the tail number and top wing number. This is actually a Classic, and the only one I have a pic of with the numbers in the "old" position.
Maybe skylark has more and better info.

I think will go with the wing top and bottom.

If you put the large numbers on the upper right and lower left wing, make sure you also put small numbers on the vertical tail as well. These were normally placed on the rudder rather than the vertical fin on Wacos.

The regs no longer require the numbers on the wings, so they don't make mention of them. The original regulation was worded as follows:
"On airplanes and gliders, the numbers shall be displayed on the lower surface of the lower left wing and the upper surface of the upper right wing. The tops of the letters or figures shall be toward the leading edge of the wing. The height must be at least four fifths of the mean chord. If four fifths of the mean chord is greater than 30 inches the numbers need not be any larger, but may not be any smaller than 30 inches in height."
The regulation goes on to talk about other special circumstances, but the above quote covers what needs to be done on a Waco.
Hope this helps!

RE: WACO YMF
I don’t have the technical info that Joe and Ken have, just pictures and observations. From what I have seen on the various Wacos, they all have the N-number on the rudder except for 2. One had the number on the fin (faux Military paint job) and the other had it under the stabilizer on the side of the fuse in small numbers (typical Waco style paint job), neither had wing numbers.
Typically the numbers were placed in the first rudder bay above the stabilizer (12002) and second bay up (NC) or the complete number in the first bay. The numbers varied in size and font but most were a “block†type font (see pictures)
Those that had wing numbers had them (about half) on the upper Right wing and lower Left wing. Often, the only number was on the rudder.
The best way to place your “N†numbers is the same way, font and style that the plane you are modeling has them.
P1 NC 14081 (YMF) – Note complete number centered over the first bay above stabilizer. Font has the clipped corners.
P2 NC 12002 (UBF) – Numbers in first and second bay with rounded font.
P3 NC 149TW (Taperwing Replica) – Number size is smaller and font is narrower in stroke.
P4 NC 12428 (QCF) – Wing Number on upper right wing
P5 NC 14081 (YMF) – Wing Number on upper right wing
P6 NC 14081 (YMF) - Wing Number on lower left wing
P7 NC 39748 (UPF) – No wing number. Note the different size and font on the rudder.

Hello all
Here's the finished motor thanks the Bill (Stickbuilder) it was an easy and fun project. I see from the pics I have a little silver paint on the spark plug wires (I'll clean that up). This is a must for your Waco. This is a good example of what the Brother Hood is all about helping others out.
Thanks
Dan

RE: WACO YMF
Hi Bill,
thanks for the info. I had contacted them already year ago n the past to provide me some drawings of the landing gear how the wheels are shock absorbed and installed to the structure. They sent me something (no E-Mail at that time seems to be long ago) but not very useful. [&o]
I thought that some one out of the brotherhood would live close to the Waco factory or has made already some pictures of it. As far as I know is this painting scheme only on the robin Willams aircraft but in blue not in red. In red thats my oppinion looks the plane eaven better than in blue. As I was flying with my blue third scale Waco on contests it was already very well noticed due to its nice painting scheme. I was placed first in a scale comp. in France with it.
Thanks for your help I will sent a mail to Classic air.
Regards
FMBB or Peter what ever you prefer.

Peter,
I wish I lived near the Waco Classic Factory but the best I can do is Creve Coeur Airport near St. Louis. I do have a bunch of pictures of NC 14081 (Robin Williams Waco Classic) and I notice just a couple of differences between it and the Red trimmed one on the WCA web site.
The first and most obvious is the front edge of the cowl is trimmed in Red.
Second is the rear windshield frame is Red.
Third the cockpit trim is Red.
Fourth it has the 2 extra fuel tanks in the wing (total of 4 fuel tanks).
Fifth, unless it is a special order, the Red trimmed YMF will be a Super and about 6" longer and 4" wider then Robin's YMF Classic. WCA started making all new Wacos Supers starting with serial number 40.
The picture in your link is of NC 702KB, s/n F5C119 (manufactured in 2008), located in Kansas. The first picture in the photo album is of this plane as well.
The second Red trimmed plane pictured on the WCA website is NC 213JJ, s/n F5C109 (manufactured in 2005) and is located in Texas. There is a side view in the Finish and Paint section under WACO New Production and 2 more at the bottom of the photo album. The cockpit trim appears to be a different color and the front cockpit cover appears to be black. The head rest fairing also has some trim color on it.
Send me an e-mail or PM and I will send you the owners address.

Peter,
I'm only an hours drive from WACO Classic Aircraft Corp and I'd love an excuse to go over there. Plus there's a nice little RC hobby shop in Battle Creek that I like to visit and I haven't been there in a while. I'd be happy to take some photos of that red & white one on their home web page if it's still around there. Besides, I wouldn't mind modeling my new Barth 1/4 scale after that one myself.
Let me know.

Hi John,
thanks for your info. I have sent a mail to WCA and they have already answered. I did not know that the photos are showing two different ACs. May be I did not look close enough to the pictures. The one with the closed fwd cockpit would be the one of most interest as I do not want to copy two cockpit dash boards.
Followin g you info they seem to be sold so WCA cannot takek any pictures besides the ones the might hopefully have in stock. I will sent you a PM to get the address may be the owner has more photos.
Thanks for being so kind in supporting my efforts

My be one of them has its anual check and is in WCA factory. I will keep you informed what they will mail. I was very astonished as I wrote them last night and have received already a preliminary answer. Bill hint was very helpful so far.

Peter,
Normally the front Instrument Panel is a lot simpler than the rear IP with just a few basic instruments.
P1 Rear Cockpit of NC 14081
P2 Front Cockpit of NC 14081
There is one company that make a replica IP in 1/3rd scale of the modern 3 section IP as used in the Waco Classic Aircraft planes. I believe the company is in Europe and the panels are very nice but a bit expensive.

John,
I know I haven't had much to say in here recently, but I've still been trying to keep up on the thread.
I have a question for you. What would the proper dimensions be for the lights in the wings at quarter scale? I was thinking of using "Maglite" reflectors, but O don't know if I should the AA size or the AAA size. Can you help, or does anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks

RE: WACO YMF
Scott,
I am guessing you are talking about the landing lights used on the modern YMF Classics and Supers. I can't say because I don't know. Waco Classic Aircraft http://www.wacoclassic.com/ may be of help and be able to give you the maker and dimensions (diameter) of the lights and you could scale it from the numbers they give you. They are fairly large diameter in relation to the wing thickness at the point of installation.
On the Classics and Supers there is a strobe on the belly and no lights aft of the cockpit on the fuse.
P1 Landing lights in 1987 WCA YMF Classic NC 14081
P2 Landing lights in 1987 WCA YMF Classic NC 14081 closer view
P3 Wing tip light on NC 14081 a combination rear light, strobe light and red or green Nav light.

RE: WACO YMF
Thanks, Angel and John.
After looking at the photos, I think Angel was right, the AA size will be about right. The reflectors are available for less than two bucks each. I don't think it will be to difficult to make it look scale.
