Brothers and Sisters of Two Wings not Three
Please hear me, Oh hear me, I beseech of thee
Is there room for another, may I ask to join?
I have plenty of pictures, but little coin.
Saving I am for another SAITO
A quality engine for my Pica WACO
And though my pictures display a naked frame
This particluar plane is far from lame
In fact I believe, when it graces the sky
Those kids with one wing will probably cry
As your roster permits room for one more
I am COTTCORC knocking at your door
Not new to the sport having flown for some years
Those who know me fly with some fear - I mean respect :-)
Oop, there's the phone now..............

RE: WACO YMF
Yesterday, when I arrived home, there was a new mailing tube waiting for me. I couldn't wait to see just what the airplane fairy had brought me, but inside the tube was a set of the original plans that were drawn By Dick Watz years ago for the Waco CSO. I have seen photos of the original model that was made from these plans, and the model is still flying with over 1300 logged flights.
Anyone interested in a set of these?

RE: WACO YMF
Bill, Charlie,
I have a set of plans from Flying Models http://www.flying-models.com/ . WACO CSO 62†plan # cf 701, cost $17 (+ $3 for the construction article, check prices) by Dick Watz (of R/C Report). They look real good with the under cambered airfoil, flat upper wing and are 1/6th scale. A couple of possible subjects;
P1 ASO NC701E (with a Wright 760E-2 engine)
P2 CSO NC 662Y (#26 on the National Air Tour) Originally an ASO now in the CSO configuration.
P3 CSO NC 671N (part of the HARM at CCA) Continental W670 engine

RE: WACO YMF
I got the 1/5 scale Pica WACO off the shelf where it's been sitting for the last year or so. Thought I'd see what it will take to retrofit, a glass filled motor mount and sprung main landing gear. I have replicated Bill's setup on the gear and have been checking the House of Moy on the modifications to eliminate the maple motor mounts. I have cut a 1/4" ply (former 1) but what are the suggestions to attach the 1/4 former to the exisiting structure? I was thinking epoxy and through bolting it with some 10-24, machine screws, with fender washers to tie it all together.
Thanks
Thanks

I was at a hobby shop in the neighboring state of Rhode Island, which by the way is owned by our AMA District 1 Rep, and he noticed the Waco Brotherhood shirt I was wearing, and paid me a real nice compliment on the logo and color. Apparently he was unaware of the Waco Brotherhood, but he's fully aware of it now. Which brings me to my next question,
What is the status of the new Brotherhood T's?
Thanks in advance,
George

George, and everyone
Jay, (damifino) is the brother who has the contact to get the shirts made. He was very high up in one of the Nascar teams. Early this year, the team was merged with another team, and since that time Jay has been on his own, building cars for other people. I'm sure that as soon as he has an opportunity to return my calls, he will.

Here is a little information that should be of interest to all. Have a look at the C/G location. This is the factory print.

RE: WACO YMF
Bill,
Thanks very much. That's very helpful data. Can anyone translate that to 33%? Without actual dimensions I would be guessing.
I spent the morning (first of six flying days in the week) flying my 33% and had a great time. My CG is about 1.5 inches in front of the AMR kit location (which is at the upper wing aft spar).
Its comforting know that I appear to be closer to factory spec.
Thanks again,

RE: WACO YMF
Bill,
Since moving the CG forward, the plane has a nice even sink rate with the plane level and sets down on the mains with the tail level. Also, it helped reduce the down elevator trim. There is still a little trim, but not much. If I had an adjustable stab it would be easy to eliminate.
I know the plane is well balance. I was just curious how close I am to factory specs.

Tonight, I'll measure the full drawing and find the exact percentage points for the C/G range. I'll post these results for you. I think you are still just a touch aft with yours. Does the model still have a propensity to drop a wingtip at slower speeds? This information would be helpful to everyone.

RE: WACO YMF
I finalized the servo setup in my Waco last evening. The throttle servo is mounted on a pair of rails that probably are in the range of overkill, but I wanted the servo to be out of the way, and still be easily removed or reinstalled. This necessitated drilling 5 small holes in the Wing saddle to facillitate access to the mounting screws and the output arm screw.
The Rudder is pull-pull, and the tailwheel servo is slaved to the rudder servo, and I have set the servo travel to only allow a small percentage of the rudder travel.
The elevator servo is straightforward.
The Servo for the Horizontal Stabilizer is adjustable via the flap knob, and the travel is limited in its ability to move the surface. I can go from a -1.5 degree (which will never be used) to a + 4.5 degree at the uppermost limit of travel. I'm starting out at +2 degrees, and expect to only need a minute adjustment to have the model completely dialed in.
The Aileron servos will be mounted in the lower wing center section, and will use a pair of Sullivan Rod in tube pushrods, driving an offset bellcrank in the wing, adjacent the root end of the Aileron. The drive linkage will utilize a pair of heavy duty ball links and a short pushrod with its kink to not interfere with the trailing edge of the wing. It's going to be as per the full scale version.
The Servo Bay in the fuselage is just aft the wing saddle, and I had to build up the edges of the formers in order to allow the covering to have no sags in the hatch line. The hatch utilizes a pair of dowells that locate into a pair of corresponding holes in the former, and a pair of screws in the former just aft the wing saddle. There are 4 servos in this small space, so it is necessary to build the tray as a removable unit, and assemble the servos into the tray prior to installing the tray in the model. On the plus side, that makes for a very easy installation, and allows for servicing of the unit.
The pushrods and pull pull unit is as short and stiff as possible, so I'm expecting great things from this one.
I will post pictures of the setup tonight.
I'll start the covering of the fuselage this weekend.
