RE: WACO YMF
Yep Andy,I'm an Andy too.Just to give y'all a short intro I live in El Paso,Texas where I work for the railroad as an engineer.I have 33 years in and 6 more to go before i'll be able to really tear into all the boxes of balsa sticks my wife is so fond of.My WACO is supposed to be here today! I'm thinking the partially built P-51 on my bench now might have to go into a holding pattern so i can start on the biplane.None of the guys i fly with have one and i'd like to be the first. They are all susceptible to getting building fever and what could be better than WACO fever?

Amscat Andy, I'm handling the Tee-shirt orders. The only ones possibly not spoken for are a few XLs. I'll post after I mail all the orders in hand whether or not there may be some late availability.....but only XL. Mitch

I am NOT "bashing" these plans, they are really a great piece of work!!!!!! They are hand drawn by someone (Robert Sweitzer - 1971) who obviously has a lot of skill. This skill I know only too well, I was a draftsman back in the early part of my career before CAD came along (that was 33 years ago when I started).

WACO Brotherhood #1
RE: WACO YMF
Too many Andys today Guess this got lost in the shuffle:
I'd be honoured if you include mein the Waco Brotherhood as well! Now that I have one Waco nearing completion and the next one already planned there's no need to just browse.

NEW BROTHER ALERT !!!!
Welcome Andy (amscat). I didn't ignore you, but I was not here. I am still
somewhat gainfully employed, and occasionally the boss wants me at work.
We hope you enjoy your membership in the Brotherhood.

Hi Andy from Andy [img][/img] . I'm in Oakville, Ontario, Canada (near Toronto) and I just retired last year from (too) many years in the computer consulting business. Love '30s airplanes, and the Waco is just such a beautiful example of a plane from that era. (Mind you, I wouldn't turn away a Monocoupe if one appeared at my door!) I'm really surprised that there aren't more Waco kits, plans etc available these days.

RE: WACO YMF
Thanks Bill - yeah scratch-build was myintention for the 1/5 scale which I'll start after my 1/6 scale is done.
What I meant was that I am surprised that Pica & Pica/Cox were really the only ones to market a Waco kit. With the Super (?) being built and flowntoday you'd think there'd be more of a demand for another kit. Mind you, a Waco won't hover very well, so it doesn't appeal to everyone I guess.

RE: WACO YMF
I think there are some simple control surface adjustments to a "scale" waco that could be made to make it more appealing to the masses, but then it wouldn't be a Waco, would it?

I too would like to join the Waco Brotherhood. I am currently flying a 1/5th scale powered by an OS 160 twin. I would like to purchase a tee shirt, size xl.

Mitch,
I ordered two large T-shirts to help get to the minimum order but would be willing to give up one of them if someone else wants it.
Thanks,
Chris

Sounds like a great place to live. I make a trip out to Holden Beach (North of Myrtle) every year after Labor Day for a golf weekend. Beautiful part of the planet.

John-
The Waco flies great with the 160, swinging 18x6 prop takeoffs are at approx 1/2 throttle and flight is just very scale-like. The extra power allows for big graceful maneuvers and is just a blast. IMHO it is a very nice reliable setup. I also have an onboard glow assist so thafter choking and pulling through two times the 160 comes to life and sounds are out of this world, ya got to try one.

RE: WACO YMF
well,
Made another step in the right direction on the Waco project. Bought a lightly used saito 150. Ran it today on the test stand and whooo. .. she's an animial! I really had my head set on the radial 170, but when push came to shoove I chose the simpler more affordable single cylinder. I also bought the 150 motor because I had it in my mind that I would convert it to gas. But, for now I think that i will stay glow. If per chance anyone has done a conversion with success please let me know I would love to talk about it with you.

RE: WACO YMF
I have been trying to figure out how to build "scale like" cuffs at the top of the landing gear. I know I do not want to attach to either the fuse or landing gear legs as I need to allow for "flex" since my landings are not always "Greased on". After trying to mold them from foam, and carve them from solid blocks, I think I found the answer.
I used 1/32nd sheet soaked with window cleaner and formed it around a large dowl. Once I had the wood where it would curve, I pinned it between the landing gear leg and fuse. After that dried, I carved a small block to form the front. Once I got that glued and rough shaped I worked on the taper on the rear of the cuff, which I left open so I can get the cuff around the landing gear leg. I will attach these to the leg and blend them in once the fuse is covered and primed. My thought is leave a small gap between the cuff and fuse, to allow for flex and make the permanent mount to the landing gear leg.
