Making some progress in finding info on rigging flying wires. I found this link through a friend in England, and it seems like it could be very useful in making some very realistic rigging. http://www.mickreevesmodels.co.uk/~m...es/p2bipe.html The aera of interest is about half way down the page. Ihave included the photo of interest below, but the instructions on how to make up the rigging got my attention. Now, where do we find the propper size flat wire and the 'forks" they are discussing in this post? And small enough to look like they belong on the plane.

Dash 7....google " Aeroscale Products" and you'll find custom made flying wires and clevises.
Saw your aerodynamics post in another forum...you're exactly correct. I'm assuming that you're an ATP flying DH -7s as well as an instructor. I'm a retired CFII MEL. Mitch WB100

Nine ONine,
Right on both counts, but retired. Ihave over five years as an instructor back in the 70's with all instructor ratings for fixed wing and was a helo instructor in the Army. Thanks for your comments.

AceRc,

If you closely at the clevis on the left and right in the attached photo, you'll see that Proctor has neither of these. The one on the left has the head of the screw inside of the fork, allowing the threaded portion to be inserted into, or soldered to, another item. In otherwords, the screwportioned is captured in the fitting. The one on the right has the threaded portion threaded into it. I could use both of them.

Joe

Anyone using a 7 cylinder radial from plans from http://www.agelessengines.com/
Or maybe Forrest Edwards 5 cylinder Radial ???

I'm been looking at building the Forrest Edwards 5 cylinder Radial but see that http://www.agelessengines.com/ has a 7 cylinder one.
To buy a ready made one is to much for me right now But I can build one over time :-)

I would have to enlarge the Pica plans to fit the radials.
Any pics or info would be great.
Anyone????

If you have the knowledge and the equipment then there is no reason to not do it. If you don't have the knowledge and equipment I can think of thousands of reasons not to do it. They are all preceded by dollar signs.

Hi Brothers,

I have been having problems getting to this page from the link I receive in my email when a new message comes up.   When I click on it I get the following message :
<fieldset>

There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

I have saved a link to my desktop, and it opens with no problems.  Would anyone have any ideas on what's going on?  Every other link Imay use functions OK.

I have the same problem. Has anyone seen anything from RCU saying what's going on, or time frame, etc? I understand server problems, maintenance, upgrades, etc., but silence on RCU's part is frustrating.

Hello all,

Had a little time this week and cut out ribs for the top wing. Not that you haven’t seen ribs before I just thought I’d show how I do it. I first make jigs from ¼” plywood this takes a little time but when your finished it make for perfect ribs every time. Use two tiny screw in your jig with the screw just coming threw the back side it will hold your balsa in place. I mounted my router to a small piece of plywood and clamped it to my work table. Using a strait Formica bit it makes perfect ribs. Just one piece of advice if you try this make sure you have a shop vac sucking up the balsa dust it can get quite messy with out one.

Dan, two cents worth.. I've had a router sitting in its box for years, now you just showed me a way to put it to good use. Cutting hard wood patterns does make it easier to fabracate parts, have you tried making patterns out of formica the stuff is tuff and stands up well.

Thanks for the tip.

Hi ceije

I’ve cut and glued tons of formica on cabinets and counter top but I’ve never tried using it for patterns. I think it would make good patterns I just like using plywood I think the plywood would hold the screws better them the formica. How’s your Waco coming along? Post some pictures if you can.

Hi to all R/C nuts and biplane fans, this is my first post here.

I have been building and flying for many years and always wanted to build a Waco YMF3 or YMF5 around 1/5 or 1/4 scale.

I already have a 1/6 scale PICA YMF3 untouched kit but would like to go bigger. Can anyone let me know whats out there? I'm interested in kits or plans.

Thanks

You can go as large as you hae the $$to support it. You can get a PICA1/5 scale every once in a while on EBay for around $300.00. Plans for a Peppino !/4 scale can be had for around $30.00. There are several large kits out there for 1/4 scale up to 33%, and one for 40% ,if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure others will sign in here with some specific recommendations.

roojoose,

You can also order plans & templates for the pica 1/5 scale (72” wing) Waco YMF from AMA plan service I think there about 50 bucks. Cowl & wheel pants are available from Fibertech & more. All the help you need is here in this thread. Give it a try.

Cowls and wheel Pants.

I have just looked at the online catalogs for Fiber Tech and Fiberglass Specialities  for their cowls and wheel pants.  There is quite a difference in their prices.  Can anyone here give an honest compairson of the two?  Fiberglass Specialities does not show photos of their product, so you can't compare them that way.  I'm very familiar with the finishing techniques of fiberglass parts, so the mold lines or slightly rough edges don't bother me much. I'm interested in the overall finish and scale size, blister sizes &  locations, weight, strength, etc.

Does anyone else make these parts for the 1/5 PICA kit?

TIA,

Joe

Fibertech has the correct cowl for a YMF with a Jacobs engine, they are evenly spaced blisters. The other company has the UMF cowl with paired blisters. There is some confusion here as the Waco kit plans make a UMF cowl for the YMF shown. There is a whole story there that I will not get into. If you want to build the YMF then your choice is Fibertech and More or build your own. Hope this helps

HI Larry,

Thanks for your reply. Last week I went to the VAMilitary Aviation Museum just South of VABeach and took well over a hundred photos of their WACOYMF5. Took some measurments as well. The blisters on that plane with the Jacobs Engine was very close to being evenly spaces, but as Imeasured them (at the trailing edge) they were spaced at 9 1/4 " and 9 3/4 ". Prtetty close to being evenly spaced. It would be difficult to measure the difference at 1/5 scale.

Have you actually seen the Fibertech product? Ifso, does it appear to be pretty heavy duty or is it a thin layup? If Iwould have to re-enforce it around the back for the mounting points, well, Ican do thatwith the plastic one that came in the kit.

Any other input on this is appreciated as well.

By the way, how are your guys doing the pinstripe in this area. At 1/5 scale it's less than 1/16" wide. The full scale stripe is 1/4 inch. Those are some pretty small radius curves to expect tape to follow!

Default RE: WACO YMF

Joe,
I have built a 25% Pepino Waco from plans and I do not recommend the plans. They are full of errors and a total PITA to build. If you want a 1/4 Waco buy a Barth kit.

I also have a 33% AMR Waco and it was a pleasure to build and it fly's great. There are plenty of 1/5 scale builds here to follow as well.

On my 1/4 and 1/3 I used automotive pinstripe for trimming out the blisters on the cowling. I used 1/16" which would look a little too large on a 1/5 scale plane IMO.

Here is a pic of my 1/4 scale showing the pinstripe.
Later!!

Or you could paint the gold/silver first, then finish with the black, just leaving a bit of the gold/silver uncovered...
Evan.
