RE: WACO YMF
I made another trip to the hobby shop at lunch time today. Picked up the Saito 90 degree exhaust adaptor, large rubber exhaust deflector and Robart 1" super ball control horns w/clevises. I'm going to try the clevises on the elevator and see how they work first. I'd like to put them on all surfaces for a better appearance than the big white nylon horns. I'm thinking of uisng their 1/2" tall ones for the ailerons but I'm not sure they will give enough leverage. The manual calls for using the last hole on the large nylon horns that are about an inch tall. Considering the minimal travel required I think shorter horns could be used.
I also finished up trying to iron out the wrinkles and bubbles. I give up at this point as some of the underlying surfaces especially the fiberglass ones at the stabilzer mount are very rough.
Picked up some potentially useful rigging material at the sewing craft shop yesterday. Lots of little formed pieces and clevises which might be fun to work with.

Hi John, my name is AL. I just purchased a set of plans for the WACO YMF from the AMA, I should be getting them with the templets within a few days, I noticed in your comments on the landing gear that you have contacted Centry Jet to possably make/manufacturer them. Has anything new developed on this mfr? and if so , how much do they want for the gear?

Al,
It seems to be a dead issue with Century Jets. I gave up trying to work with the guy a long time ago. Bill had a similar experience with another manufacture also a while ago I believe.

Try Tail Dragger they have some small lovers. Look in the giant scale hardware. Hope this helps.

Errol, I made some for my 1/3 scale Waco, not sure that they are scale size but look ok to me. You are welcome to some if you wont. Regards, tmac

RE: WACO YMF
You can make some reasonably good looking louvers from a piece of square stock. Just split it into a couple of triangles, and carve out the inside, and shape the ends to the radius that you want. I've done it before and no one can tell that they are not real louvers.

The center photo is the exhaust. I didn't mean to include this one with my post.

RE: WACO YMF
Hi Guys
Thanks a lot for all your input. I really appreciate it. The one's from Taildraggers could be a bit big for a 1/4 scale. I guess I will have to try and make some. Will keep you all informed.

Hi all. I found the application of the rib stitching and cover tapes to be very time consuming, but after applying the undercoat and a good sand back I was pleasantly surprised at how good it turned out. I now cant wait to see how it looks after the top coat of yellow. All the wings are now ready for the final finish so I think I will go strait ahead and paint them so as to give me a bit of drive to get this project finished.

Your wings look great with all the rib stitching on. If I may ask why did you use blue as an undercoat? I tried painting mine yellow over silver and it didn’t cover well I finally used white primer and the yellow covered much better. I’m only asking because I will be painting a new set of wings for my Waco soon.

RE: WACO YMF
Hi all, I received the set of plans for the 1/5 WACO YMF-5 from the AMA today with the associated templets. I down loaded the revised manual (17 pages ) on line. Can anyone tell me if I also need the basic 45 page manual in order to build this WACO. Does the modified manual compliment the basic manual? I also tried to download the basic manual but all I got was an empty screen, Is this basic manual still available ? Your help and comments are greatly appricated.

Al,
The newer manual may make things go a little easier, but I doubt it. You can get the newer manual if you wish.

RE: WACO YMF
Errol, & to all,
for what its worth, wing tip lights i had been discussing with Errol sizes may have to be adjusted for your scale these are aprox. for 1/4 scale. this is where the DAVE PLATT theory comes into play.
"SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BUILD IT A LITTLE WRONG FOR IT TO LOOK RIGHT"
these took aprox. 3 weeks to make by trial and error and a lot of scrap wood and allumnium sheet, good luck and have fun.

chris melhus ceije 196

1. i started with a piece of scrap 1/4" ply cut 30mm X15mm
2 & 3. then divided by 3 and made cuts to depths using plys for guage
4 & 5. drill three holes, center the end lights close to your cuts, center light hole was counter sunk 1/4" strobe goes in from the face. i epoxied the lights in and shaped block around the lamps
6. make a 30mm X 30mm slug from sheet allumnium .05mm thick i centered it in a vice used a 1" drill bit shank to form a shape
7. holes were then drilled 1/4" center screw holes are 1/16"
8 & 9. shaped lights i mounted to wing tip just aft of the forward spar use filler and finish
10. light cover trimmed to expose half of stern light and 2/3 back for side light
