Hello all,
Update on the shirt color. Yellow is ahead of all other colors and most all would like to see the shirts printed like the first batch.

I use a high tech method. I put the tubing between 2 pieces of wood and whomp it with a hammer.

Bill, I'm not sure where I went wrong, but here are the pics of how it came out. I will keep looking and try to get to the bottom of it. As you can see in the pics, I made every thing as close to the templates as I could. Maybe not exactly perfect, but close enough that I should have been able to just fine tune a little. Not sure where I went wrong.

A matter of projection. In the side view, the strut is actually tipped toward you, making it LOOK shorter that it really is.

so, is this how it looked for others? that would make sense. I was laying in bed last night getting myself all worked up thinking something was wrong with the plans, or the temps, or me. mostly me. so you think I should proceed? thanks for the input/ Steve.

Steve, where did you get this neat template for the Cabane strut. The plans and templates I got from House of Moy did not include this. I just used the plan side view to shape mine. I hope this does not affect the flight characteristics too much...

It came with the plans and templates it came with the plans and temps from AMA that bill submitted. I have to think that if you built yours from the side view, they'll be wrong. If you want I'll scan and email it for you. Not too sure how accurate that is, I'm sure someone here will know.

Cowboyharry,
You can down load the templates for the cabane struts and every thing else here.

I'm on the last stages of linkage rebuild. When I got it the controls were pretty dubious. Now have Sullivans running to the tail and each lower aileron has its own servo now. Not sure if the plans I found are for the 1/5 or 1/6, but the tabs for the interplane struts are nylon. Mine ended up looking like they were cut from brass sheet. Pretty sloppy with 2-56 hardware, so had to redo a lot of the fastenings, as well.

With everything assembled, (minus Rx, battery and cowl) and getting ready to check the CofG, weighed in a hair less than 12lbs. considering the scale. don't think that's too bad.

p.s. Have to recreate the windshield. Had it removed for safety and wouldn't you know it. Knocked it off the bench and when I moved the chair to grab it something else fell on it and it's now in 3 pieces. Think the plastic was a bit brittle. Unfortunately no easy source for the yellow tinted plastic. Will stay with clear for now.

Just a friendly reminder to get your t shirt color votes in to Dan Hudson by means of PM. If you don't have a preference either way, then please let him know that as well. Time is running out. We would like to have the shirts for the start of the flying season . ( for those of us that live where there are more than one season). Thanks, Steve.

Cougar,

Clear is good, I haven't yet seen a Waco with a yellow windshield, nor any other plane. Yes some jets have a gold windshield but that is mixed in with the wind shield canopy material.

If the windshield was yeller, it was probably old plastic, and it would be brittle. Looking good!

Thanks, great web site.
The House of Moy web site had all of these EXCEPT the template for the cabane struts, which I noticed also includes the windshield template and the landing gear. Boy this would have really helped me out a few months ago...
Thanks again!

So I have the airframe nearing completion and I'm starting to seriously think about covering the plane.
I'm considering a fabric material and thinking about trying Solartex http://shop.balsausa.com/category_s/119.htm.
I have no experience with it or any other fabric for that matter, but I believe it would be appropriate for this plane.

I'd like to go with a creme color (the Linen Solartex) with a burgundy trim, but I am not sure what sort of paint to use with the Solartex.
I would need a matching color for the wheel pants, cowl and other unpainted surfaces as well as the burgundy trimming.
Problem is, I don't know what kind of paint is compatible with the Solartex.

Does anyone have any experience with Solartex that they would be willing to share with me?

Thanks in advance.

Cowboy,
You will love using solartex and it can be painted with most any type of paint. I painted mine with krylon spray paint.

At this point, I feel like I actually own a Waco. Not just a pile of wood anymore. I had to almost pull an all nightwear to get here, but I can sleep another time. I got the switches installed, and the fuel tank is installed and plumbed. Later I will take a trip and get some more fuel tubing so I can install and plumb the smoke tank. I also ordered the remainder of the wood this morning to build the wings. I'm not very happy with the cabane struts. They look like poop so I will try and figure out another way to do them. Bill, what size brass did you use for em?right now the stabs are just balancing up there and still need to be shaped and sanded, but I wanted to see how it looked. I'm also debating on the front cockpit. I think I like the looks of the single better. Well, still a lot to do.....but at least there's a Waco in my hanger!
i think I'm wacko for waco's.

Thanks Dan. It only seems that way because I've been out of work for a couple of weeks and have been obsessively working on it sometimes for 18 to 20 hours straight. Last night I got in bed at 1:30 and was up at 3:30 again. It's catching up to me now though. I'm flippin beat.

Yeah, it's only adjustable now because it's not attached yet.LOL. No, it's going to be fixed at 2 degrees positive. I think the adj. stab is a bit beyond my comfort level. I just ordered the piano hinges and some paint for another bird from john at Nelson hobby, I've never ordered something before and was told to pay after it was shipped. I didn't know there was still trust in this world.

Cowboy, I will second Dan's endorsement of Solar-tex, it is really nice material to work with. It goes around corners much easier than the plastic stuff and will accept just about any paint you can put on it.
