Falcon from Ben Buckle plans

11 Attachment(s)
A while ago I had the idea to build the Falcon with a homebuilt petrol engine (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/gas-...ol-engine.html) , the engine is now almost finished and now I started building the wings of the Falcon

You built it one piece.....I always do as well..just think it is the best way to go no matter the span. Going to be a beaut. Solartex for the covering? What engine will you be using for power? Neal

Neal , Up to about 2 m (80 ") I build the wing usually in one piece but on this (96") they are in 2 separate parts, they slide into each other with tongues, see picture .
For covering I am going to use this , http://www.benbucklevintage.com/inde...roducts_id=311
The intention is to use engine that I have built myself . See link http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/gas-...ol-engine.html

Looking fantastic.

Hello,
Have just started my Ben Buckle Falcon build.
Looking at your photographs Jeff to assist me in my build.
I wondered whether you were testing the structure of your fuselage by loading it with batteries?
It seems to be standing up to the strain, should be strong in the air.
I have enjoyed looking at your build.
Nothing on here to show where your build is now.
Regards..Ian

It is nice to hear that my photos can help you in the construction of the Falcon , I hope you also start a build report with pictures .
The batteries are not a structural test , they serve simply as a dead weight when the glue was drying :)
For the moment there is not much Falcon building going on , I have to finish some other projects first for some colleague builders ,
I am making on the lathe some molds for vacuum forming and metric drawing for the Mills 1,3 cc diesel along with some casting of the cranckcase , see pictures

Hello Jeff,
Many thanks for your reply.
I wasn't serious about the structural testing.
Have done some more work on the fuselage today.
Some time since I have been on a forum.
Will have to figure out how to upload photographs to the forum.
Bye for now ..regards...Ian

The pegs on the wingtip look like it has a very colourful mohawk! ;)

sjpateys 11-14-2016 08:04 AM

I hope you're not putting that Mills 1.3cc in the falcon!

Jef's Engineering

ukengineman 11-15-2016 03:30 AM

Jef, I was just looking through this thread again and would would have some serious misgivings about your tongue and box wing joiner. An 8 foot span model will have a considerable bending moment at the joint and this has to be countered by a moment applied over a few inches by the tongue in the box. The force trying to burst the box apart will be very large.

I don't think this will be a problem Alen , I have followed the plan and read several building logs and the wing is always connected in this way ,
also I have contact with a fb friend who flies a Falcon for many years with also the same wingconnection without any problems ,
so I have reasonable confidence that this is good , but thanks anyway for your concern .

Covering

Both the model and the engine look superb. Have you decided what material you are going to cover the Falcon with? Will you be running your engine on petrol or methanol?
Alan
