Top Flite Contender Build - Flap Question
Hello all. I just ordered a Top Flite Contender kit and should start the build within the next week or so. I have a question about the flap option. I currently own a 4 channel radio. Can I build the plane without the flap, and later add it when I get a radio with more than 4 channels? Or, should I build the flap option and "set" it in place somehow so it does not move (glue, wooden dowel?, other method?) or would it be easy to modify later down the road? Another option might be to build it with the flap, hook up a servo to it, but just don't use use until I get a radio that supports flaps. Would this adversely effect the flight characteristics? It will probably be a while before I get another radio, so pre-build advice is appreciated.
Any other advice prior to starting the build?
Thanks in advance.
Jim

RE: Top Flite Contender Build - Flap Question
I would suggest building it without the flap option right now. You don't really need flaps on this aircraft and the time/trouble it takes to put them in and then not use them would be better spent flying IMO.

RE: Top Flite Contender Build - Flap Question
Easiest way, if you plan to expand your R/C system and add flaps later would be to build the model with the flap, and then just use a pushrod with one end screwed to a hardwood or ply brace so that the flap doesn't move. Using a servo isn't a good idea because it would not be rigid, and could be knocked out of position. Build the flap, hinge it, install the horn and pushrod, but instead of having a servo at one end, just bend a loop in the wire and use a screw and washer to hold it in place.
