I'm so totally FREAKING STOKED!!!

I called in sick from work today, but its such a nice perfect warm sunny day outside and DEAD FREAKING CALM!!!

I could not resist the Call of Axe!!

I was flying all around today!!! :D And my trusty training gear are still on!! :D

Flight Report:

Did tons of long, fast runs along a 100' long oval. Lots of coordinated, "locked in" turns!

I need to work on my landing approaches. Transitioning from flying around to hovering close by was a challenge for me today. Lots of landing attempts looked bad and I had to 'wave' myself off, give some throttle, get some altitude, re-steady, and try again.

On one lift-off, I almost lost it because that little wire on the tail fin hooked on the grass!! But my new found disclipline on take-offs realized it in time and I shut down, and moved the Axe by hand to a spot where the tail was clear.

Observation: Foward Flight is EASIER THAN HOVERING!!! When hovering, you are always counter-correcting and anticipating every little move. Its kind of a battle. When flying, you can cruise and just make small adjustment to stay level and going the direction you want. Its much easier! I was having very relaxed FUN!!! Zoom!! Swoosh!!! Wooo hooo!!! BOOoooYAAAAhhhh!!!

I went through all 3 of my packs, conservatively shutting down before the packs got too low. I did not want any mishaps from instability today!

Mechanically, she did pretty good. Tracking seems fine, if not totally perfect. She looks better flying than on the test bench.

Hopefully, I'll finally get my new e-board from Tower todayand I can get rid of the pesky TTCS. It's the only bug in the system now...
Nice. Maybe the tracking on the blades changes from bench testing to flight due to rotor wash.
Hmm, the book says to check tracking at 0 pitch with the blades at speed, so I could be wrong on that. Perhaps you're checking tracking with some pitch applied do to adjustment of the throttle trim. I beleive that affects the power to pitch curve? I was playing with it last night with some interesting results; Seems more responsive with the throttle trim set lower. My guess was that this allowed for more head spead at a given pitch.

Yaaay! I got home today to find my replacement e-board from Tower! I'm installing it now, and testing tonight. With any luck, it will work fine and my tail twitch will be fixed.

RE: axe cp thread

I put my E-board from Tower under the microscope for visual inspection. I used to do a lot of QA for soldering issues.

It looked pretty good but there was a nasty solder splash on the right leg of the big power FET. I whipped out the trusty Weller and surgically touched up the lead, leaving it shiny and mil-spec.

The power input leads have too much solder and they look very close to shorting - but I went over all the inputs and outputs with an Ohmmeter and detirmined the unit was safe to install.

I replaced the micro Dean's with an Ultra Dean's to match my LiPo, and proceeded with the bench test.

With radio on, after power connected I got a green light in 3 seconds! Great! My old one sometimes could take a couple minutes, never less than 20 seconds or so...

I verified servo action and then fired up the mains. Tail is smooth!!

I shut down and dialed in max Gyro Gain. The tail twitches!!

I shut down and dialed in minimal Gain. The tail is sloppy!!! SUCCESS!!! [sm=tongue_smile.gif]

Woo hoo!! Got that one right!! I probably should not have been flying around over 100' up with a defective e-board, huh??? [&:]

Hopefully, I can sneak in some hover practice in the clubhouse after dinner... :D

RE: axe cp thread

Wow, wish I knew of the green light taking so long to come on. Mine has never taken more than a few seconds, let alone a couple minutes. Was it like that from the start?

Curious, if it gets worse, that way I will know if mine is going out before I have a problem with TTCS.

Yeah, mine only takes a couple seconds to stop blinking; that's why I thought I might be disrupting the gyro initialization by jarring the copter while plugging in the batt, the thing would just stop wobbling by the time the light went solid.
Good to hear ya got it fixed, now I know what to look for if I got a board problem.
I'm almost ready to start hover'n round the yard with mine, just trying to nail down how long I've got to fly and get er on the ground before I lose control due to low batt. So far I'm figuring about 3 mins and 30 secs, on the standard batt.

Mine, aswell takes a couple of seconds.

RE: axe cp thread

It should take 10 seconds before moving the heli so the gyro can stabilize my light only stays on for a few of those ten seconds. But comes on right away after plugging in the batt.

SchoooBak look for one of those $23.99 lipos 11.1v 1200 -1300MAh because they are making them better all the time the older ones are getting cheaper to buy. You will get a whole lot more time when you get outside with one of those. 12-15 min.

MY TP11.1v 1320MAh cost me about 57. with the Mini plug for the AXE CP heli about month and a half ago LHS and I don't have a balancer yet I use the ICE charger very nice. I have it set for 11.1v lipo 1.3A because that is as close to 1320 as i can get. Just be careful not to over charge the li-po batt. I charge mine in a big cooking pot with a lid and never leave it alone while charging.

Anyone using Li-pos due yourself a favor and watch this video (it could save your house!)

ok charge at 1.3A without a balancer bad idea if one gets to high boom charge at .5A till you get a balancer

chaseman81 03-15-2007 09:13 AM

RE: axe cp thread

With the Ice Charger it only charges at 1.3 for a while then it automatically steps down as the battery fills the ICE is a very cool charger that reads the batt and adjust accordingly. The Batt reads just as the instructions said it should volts and Mah wise after charging. Beleive me I am careful the charger cost me $120.00 alone and is well worth every penny.

RE: axe cp thread

I have a TP1320 that has been recharged 15-20 times and has never seen a balancer. I check each cell with a multimeter after every charge and they have never been more than .1v off. Obviously a balancer is the way to go, but if you don't use one you can still ensure a little safety by checking with a meter at the balance plug. On a 3s battery there are 6 wires at the plug. the first 2 wires go to one battery, the second 2 to the next, and the last pair to the third. Check the two outside wires for total pack Voltage. I wouldn't recommend anyone trying this, but if you needed to balance a pack and didn't have a balancer you could discharge the high cells individually through a resistor until all of the voltages were even.

RE: axe cp thread

I would also highly recommend some lipo packs for your Axe. You do have to be careful with them and treat them with respect. Since I got my 3rd lipo I don't even touch the stock NIMH anymore. I have two TP1320s and one MaxAmps1100. While the MaxAmp pack was $20 cheaper the TP packs seem to provide much more juice. I am charging my lipo using a Hyperion EOS1210i charger with a LBA10 balancer. With this setup I am able to safely charge my lipo packs at 2c or 2.6A for the 1320. If you are using cheaper lipos I would definitely get a balancer. However, after about 15 cycles I have found that the Tunder Power packs stay balanced very well one their own.

RE: axe cp thread

I would have to agree about the TP 1320 I have also about 15 charges and Mine come back great everytime.[8D]

Time to go hover in the basement for 7 minutes and take a break then fly for another 7 min then charge it up and fly some more tonight :D

Hey did anybody watch that video i posted today?

RE: axe cp thread

I watched that video. That is crazy. Now I know why my uncle keeps thaem in A fire proof box. He has about eight. they are about twice the size of the ones for this heli. Hate to see the explosion they would make. No I wouldn't, just hate to see it in the house.

RE: axe cp thread

when people pass away and if they have a pacemaker they must be removed if they are to be cremated because of the explosion in the cremation chamber can do major damage. the gases are suppose to be toxic too.... Carebeful!

Chaseman81

P.S you have a smart uncle also the fire proof box is a great idea. Everyone should be aware of what they have and the care that is needed to use them. if you hear ticking unplug right away and move it outside quickly. watch the video

I'm so pissed. I finnaly got the shipment of my tail blades from Tower. Only problem is is that they sent me a turnbuckle, camber linkage for a traxxes truck. Myother package should be here tomorrow. Then I have to fix the tail boom along with other things. So now I have to wate until like wednesday to be able to fly.

RE: axe cp thread

I use CP tail blades about 2.99 instead of 6-7

RE: axe cp thread

I have a question about gyros for the AXE CP that I hope one of you can answer.

I know that the CP is ready-to-fly and comes with one gyro, right out of the box. But Heli-Max also seems to recommend the installation of a heading hold gyro: http://manuals.hobbico.com/hmx/hmxe04-gyro-manual.pdf

The recommended heading hold gyro, plus the recommended LiPo battery, cost an additional $180 (on top of the $200 the CP itself costs).

My question: Have any of you installed the recommended heading hold gyro, or are you flying the CP using just the gyro it comes with? If you have installed the additional gyro, how valuable do you find it to be (in terms of ease-of-flight)?

Thanks,

-Lon

I fly mine stock except for the batt. I have the 11.1v 1320 lipo MUCH NEEDED everything else is stock and she flys great. I have seen a couple of post of guy's using the dx6 and head hold but that makes a inexpensive heli almost $600 bucks

Before I do all that I will buy a trex 450 or save save save for a 600 trex I belive.

I like my little AXE just fine and shes ok out of the box but the lipo makes her great!

OUCH!!![:@] I got home from work today and it was nice and calm outside. I got very excited and took the Axe out in the front yard for the first time. I did fine through the first battery. Halfway into the second, tragedy struck. I got too close to a car and dropped it down fast. The heli flipped onto it's side and flopped around for a second or two. [X(] Total damage is pretty impressive: main blades, blade grips, main rotor gear, tail boom, rear motor mount. So I will head down the the LHS tomorrow and see if they have everything. If I have to order anything it will be Wednesday before I can get it. So I am out of comission for the weekend.[:'(] This is a real bummer but I am not going to let it stop me from flying! I will get it repaired and flying again ASAP. I will just get to play with my trucks this weekend instead of the Heli.

just a side note.

i broke the rear motor mount and its a b$%%& to get it back cause u gotta solder the motor back on and i aint no good with a soldering iron.

Thanks for the heads up. The soldering is not going to be a problem for me. I have made my own side by side NIMH packs for my trucks and soldered many a lead onto a motor. I am more intimidated my taking the head and main shaft apart to replace the main rotor gear. I will just take it very slow and lay everything out in an orderly fashion when I disassemble it.

Yah BoysToys cars and rc helis doen't make a good combo. A week ago I was flying in the front yard and got to close to the neighbor's car. I pulled the right stick all the way to the left. The tail boom nailed a tree and bent the boom and cracked the tail mount clean off at the boom end. It also cut the wire extension to the tail motor. I still have not recieved the parts from tower. Hopefully should be here monday. How come they don't send out the tracking number. It is in the email but can't access it on the ups website.

The main gear is easy. you don't have to take much apart at all. undo the links from the balls all three servos let them lay. then under the FRAME (top) under the swashplate area is a wheel coller on the main shalt loosen that. ( now there will be play a little) undo the bolt hold the main gear on the shaft (tap out) NOW have someone hold the heli upside down firmly and tap the shaft out from the bottom (easy does it) use blowdryer for a moment and remove the gear.

Now putting it back togeter is easy too remember the d shape in the gear and bottom of shaft
line up holes in shaft and gear slide it on (tight) blowdryer a bit and boom she slides right on.
bolt throught hole shaft in bottom frame slide up the wheel coller tighten add links back to the balls everything should still be tracking well and your gear is installed.

about 15-20min job

chaseman81-- Thanks for the How-To. Question, What is the blowdryer for? What part should I heat up? Thanks!

I am hoping that my LHS will have all of the parts I need in stock. I really only need the main rotor gear and rear motor mount. I have a spair set of blades and grips and was able to bend the tail boom back to almost straight. I will give the LHS a call tomorrow and see what they have.
