Savage Temperature
Hi Guys
I am running 30% in my savage on a med plug and I find that my truck engine is getting really hot. There is smoke coming out the pipe so I don't think its too lean. Is this high temp something I should be worried about??

RE: Savage Temperature
Do you have a temp gun. If not then plan on buying a new engine. You never tune an engine on smoke. I've had an engine lean out on me with smoke pouring out. You need a temp gun. If not you will wear out your engine. Good crawling temps are between 232 degrees and 245 degrees. High speed running temps (street) are good between 254 degrees and 275 degrees. If you don't have a temp gun I recomend this one, http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/701630.asp. Good Luck.

Yes defiantly get a temp gun as they are a lot cheaper then a motor or even a piston and sleeve. My manual on my 4.6 says 210 to 275 degrees. I run my motors around 250 to 260. I think 210 is too cold.

RE: Savage Temperature
I've never owned a big-block that ran HOTTER with 30% than 20%... not that they aren't out there... If this is an original Savage engine (21, 25, 28) then 30% with stock shimming is fine. Amsterdamn has the 25 in his truck, and he ends tanks at about 270-280F at peak tune. The 25 likes to be run warm, although this maybe for nothing, as you didn't say WHAT ENGINE OR WHAT TEMPS....

RE: Savage Temperature
I got a question on temps, i tuned my SS today and it was running good till I put the body on. I am thinking that I need to cut some vent holes in the front window to let some air through, its toppin out at about 290 but that is on street with no holes in the body, what do ya'll think? I really didnt think of this until it was dark... so I will see what the temps are tommorrow...

RE: Savage Temperature
How does it work with the body off. If it works fine with it off try cutting a vent hole or richening it up. I have left my body without holes in the windsheild and im just gettin temps like 265

RE: Savage Temperature
hmmmm.
I've had the same problem. If you are having blue smoke (which means rich mix) and you get high temps, check if sthing is binding.
For me it was dirt in the diff box and a slight binding of the 2 disc-brake I had installed.
I guess I'll try my sav today.
Keep us informed.

RE: Savage Temperature
yeah i noticed my disc brakes were binding also, I had originally installed them and they were so tight the truck didnt move. I thought that ain't right so I loosened them, ooops. I figured it out late last night and re-tightened them, the truck rolls fine and the brakes work real good. I have not re-checked them temps without the body on, will do that today. It looks like I have the thing rich as all can be, LOL... I will post results later on today.. gotta do that work thang...

I got a question, I usually run O'Donnell 30%and I had to get the trinity platinum 30% because my LHS didn't have any O'Donnell. Well I ran it and I couldn't get my temps over 200!! Should I use alu. foil?

RE: Savage Temperature
Yep, same hear. The lowest I let it fall to is 240, anything lower and the performance starts to drop and it will probably wear down my sleave faster if it gets to cool. I don't like to push the 275 limit though... Keep it at 260 and it screams [>:]

RE: Savage Temperature
There is no paper absolute limit as long as it isn't lean... The stock 25 in the SS wheelie vid ( http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=2389010 ) was finishing tanks at 290-295F.

RE: Savage Temperature
well today i got it up to 260, but I was running in DEEP grass and almost burned up my clutch[:@] need to get alu. shoes... but frost is right, you can run an engine at high temps as long as it isent lean, its running it at low temps that hurts you.
