Pull start
Hello,
I have a problem with my pull start. When I tighten the screws that mount the pull start to my engine the pull start cord does not wrap back up. If I loosen the screws a little the cord will wind back up, but after a little bit of driving the screws will come out and the pull start will come out and break.[:@] I've tried putting lock-tight on the screws but it doesn't help. Any suggestions are welcome.

RE: Pull start
If i remember correctly it is because the pullstart housing is pressing on the pullstart mechanism itself - usually the knot in the end of the pullstart cord.
Try taking the pullstart off and have a look inside - it should be obvious what is catching. Then just 'stuff the knot or whatever out of the way so that it doesn't catch.

RE: Pull start
I'm not sure if the string is rubbing on anything but I can't stuff it in any more.[] I'm going to try stronger lock-tight and see if that works.

RE: Pull start
Its happened on a few occasions to me. When you tighten the screw the pullstart wheel inside binds against the backplate. If you use stronger thread lock you might have difficulty in trying to release it if need be. The idea is to create a gap between the pullstarter and the engine backplate. The best solution for this which also fulfills another important factor, is the use RTV Sealant. Firstly it will seal any gaps around the pullstarter and it will help act as a thin spacer and help your pullstarter move freely.

RE: Pull start
The knot from the pullstart cord sometimes sticks out and rubs when the pullstart is fully tightened down. Use a screwdriver and jam the knot into the groove a bit more. Then use threadlock on the screws, and tighten the screws all the way down.
