I have found my recorded flights into recording directory but they all have .REC files extensions. Is there a way to convert them for those who do not have AFPD by using Windows media player?

You could use Fraps. Fraps works good with a high performance video card. The best way I found to use it with lower performace card, is to first record your flight using the AFP built in record feature. Then, set replay speed to 50% and record the playback with Fraps. Then using video editing software such as Windows Movie Maker, speed the video back up 2x, and save as .wmv

could you use anything apart from Fraps?

You could use a video camera. Maarten de Moor uses that too.
