Making it half black is good, but it really doesn't matter as the sensor is looking for a change in the reflection. If the change isn't long enough (narrow stripe at high RPM) it could be missed.

I use the optical sensor on my models, and painting it half gloss white, half flat black does the trick for me.

Default optical sensor

Here's what I have found works well. Paint the entire back of the spinner flat black. Then apply the silver strip that comes with the sensor out near the edge lengthwise from prop shaft towards the edge. Next mount the sensor so that the two nubs see the strip sequentially. I don't believe it makes any difference which nub crosses the silver first, maybe I've just been lucky.

If you expand that jpg you'll note that the lead is on the inner side and the two mounting holes are the shiny bits on top of the PC board.

Can the telemetry module connect to a land speed sensor?
Or will the GPS live stream land speed data?

The TM1000 does not work with our Surface receivers, only with Aircraft and Marine.

Is it possible to get a true land speed reading on the display screen ?
I know that my iPhone app Road Bike calculates the land speed of my bicycle.
Will the STI GPS sensor send the true land speed?

Of the iPhone - yes. Use the GPS for that.

What transmitter and receiver are you planning to use?

I have the Graupner that you converted for me and a HiTec Aurora 9 but I want to use this for my custom electric bicycle with my iPhone.
it would be great to only have one dashboard screen up when on the EV bicycle rather than going back and forth in the apps. Too dangerous to do that when going fast.

The TM1000 needs to have a Spektrum DSM2 or DSMX aircraft transmitter operating in order for it to transmit. The GPS module would have to be attached to the TM1000.

Why does Spectrum advertise that you don't need a transmitter to use the STI?
There must be some way to use my iPhone with some manufacturers telemetry system?

I am custom building a battery/motor electric bicycle and need to install the radio and telemetry components into a small compartment in the frame. Can the TM-1000 and the receiver be hard-wired to the transmitter board? I will be using a 48volt BEC for the transmitter and all other components.
The ESC will be a Castle Creations HV-110 with a Castle Creations servo tester for the accelerator switching.
I will be running 12 cells in series and two parallel for a total of 48 volts 10 amp hours (probably about 40 volts under load). All this from a pack that weighs in at 70 ounces. I'm using an Astrolight BL

We advertise that you can use it with transmitters which do not support telemetry, such as the DX6i or JR 9503. The transmitter is a necessary component of the system.

As for the hard-wiring, I'm afraid I can't help you there. Why not just use the GPS that's already in the phone?

It doesn't have voltage and heat.
i want to keep an eye on the motor and batteries. They are a sizable investment.

Over in RCG there's a DIY electronics forum which has people who do the kind of thing you want.

Hey, Andy. I have a DX9 that I'm using with an F86 turbine. Approach speed with jets is critical. As such, Im using the airpeed pitot and module with voice callout alerts. I like how the airspeed can be set to call out real time data at intervals, such as every 5 secs, or 10 secs, etc. But, the ideal would be to turn this on during the landing phase only, with a switch. Can this be done with the DX9?
Thanks! Rick
PS: I see the DX9 has a rubberized thumbwheel. Thank heavens! The metal one on the DX8 is very slippery. I long ago installed orings around mine to improve traction.

On the DX9, I figured out a way around the lack of being able to assign the telemetry speaker to a switch, at least in a limited way. You set a minimum alarm for airspeed, for example. The maximum can be set too, but that doesn't matter much right now as the airspeed for landing approach is what I'm after. So, lets say the minimum is set to 50mph. As the plane descends, you'll hear no voice updates to airspeed until you slow down below 50mph, setting off the alarm. AT that point, the DX9 will give you continuous updates of airspeed data, vocally, until you hit the clear button. So, doing it this way, the pilot won't be pestered throughout the flight with airspeed updates. The only thing is the alarm will go off, giving zero airspeed updates when the transmitter is first turned on. Just clear that.

It seems there are problems with the DX9 firmware with respect to telemetry. When the alarm updates are set to tone/vibe, the transmitter goes nuts and you are thrown back to the main screen. You have to fight your back to the telemetry menu. Also, voice alerts alone don't work at all. The telemetry doesn't even function with voice-alone set. So, why have it as an option? When the alerts are set to voice/vibration, it all works well. When you set it to vibration-alone, you get voice too. All inexplicable. I have firmware 1.02, in case Andy is reading. The other funny thing is when I first bought the transmitter, the voice was American English. After the update, it's UK all the way, even though the screen says USA region whatever. What's that all about????

UPDATE: I decided to check for a new DX9 firmware update....and whaddya know, there's an update from Jan 14th this month. It's pretty new. This update still has UK English, but much of the firmware voice vs vibe issues have been fixed. Voice is just voice alone, vibe is vibe alone (no voice), and voice/vibe combination also works. Nice work Spektrum. How did that get thru in the first place? The tone or buzzer alarm is still highly annoying and makes the transmitter go nuts. I would just do away with that choice. It's useless.

Andy Kunz, I see there is a new DX18 with voice coming out. Will there be an update kit for older DX18 owners?

I don't know what the plans are. It's not just a "snap this in and go" kind of update. It took the techs an hour+ each to convert the radios for testing. I couldn't imagine them selling the guts of the radio separately, to be honest.

Hey Andy, I just tried to update my DX18 from V1.00 to current and it has locked up in the Raw Input Test screen?

Go back and install v1.04 first, THEN update to 1.04D. That usually clears it. If not, instructions are found here (I used Google to find them): http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...postcount=1727

Right, they wouldn't sell an update kit. I was thinking more like we send the radio in for conversion.
