Tried a search but no luck. Just got a steel table top and would like to start building with magnets. Where is the best place to buy them? How many, what shape/size, etc.

I have bought a lot of magnets from MagCraft and they are pretty strong and seem to work well.

You can also buy them from McMaster Carr which is also another good source to buy magnets as well as just about everything else.

Link to source from Airfield Models. Good magnets, pretty cheap, work with fixtures on Airfield Models website. [link=http://www.magnetsource.com/airfieldmodels/]MAGNETS[/link]. 100 is a start, 200 is better. You can end up using lots of them when building a wing, add in the ones that are permanently attached to fixtures and you'll run out of 100 pretty quick. Here's a wing I built recently with magnets.
