I have a sig se on the way so I've been buying all the tools for buildin and completion of the plane. I bought metal control rods , straight aluminum landing gear, nylon bolts and blind nuts for the wings and landing gear, and 4 futaba 3004 servos. However here is where I screwed up. I read a review that a sig se w/ a K&B .61 is a great combo. So I went to K&B website and researched. The .61 comes in at 14 oz where an evolution .46 and os .46 come in at around 19oz. Sold I'll get a K&B .61. Well surfing the web I find a K&B .61 w/ the "tuned pipe". Ad said came out of a plane w/ very few flights, had great compression yada yada yada. So I buy this for almost the cost of a new (just because the tuned pipe is discontinued). Well it shows up today, I turn it over and it does have great compression. Take the glow plug out, looks great , coils aren't expanded so I know it wasn't run lean at least w/ that plug in. Then I take the back plate off. OH MY VARNISH AND RUST. Totally got screwed , looks like it sat with fuel in for at least 5 yrs. I WILL buy a used pair of dirty underwear online before I EVER buy another used nitro engine. Sorry fellas , just had to vent, I totally screwed myself because now the wife won't let me buy another engine for a while. GRRRRR frustrated[:@]

+1. It doesn't take but a little while to open up a two stroke and clean it up and install new bearings. Bearings are about $15.00. Most of the used engines you buy are going to have some rust in them depending on where {state/area} or how it was put away. If it's free spinning and the bearings roll smooth they may be OK. Rust on the crank is nothing new.
For the price of the new K&B I wouldn't have bothered with a used one. Most the time a tuned pipe is more trouble then it's worth on a stunt plane owned by a sport pilot. They can be a pain.

Mecoa sells the tool. I will get the part # for you. The brand new engine comes with a tool but this tool is only to make sure the head is tight it is not strong enough to loosen it. Give me a couple minutes and i will get the part#

part# 11-6192 head tool heavy duty style. it is in stock and is 15.95
part# 18-0002 front bearing it is in stock and is 12.60
part# 18-8777 rear bearing it is in stock and is 18.00
You can order these parts from MECOA remember to use anti size on the head where it screws into the block.
A brand new engine with the sport muffler is 109.99 from them
I'm sure you can order bearings cheaper else where. But you will need the tool to unscrew the cylinder head.

First off all GrayBeard is right a tuned pipe is more trouble on a sport plane than they are worth,
the practicality doesn't out weigh the benefit, it takes a lot of work to get the engine on the pipe and
working without the motor going lean in the air.
The Something Extra was designed as a sport aerobatic airplane and when powered by the recommended
40-46 2 stroker are plenty fast, have a Magnum 52 in mine and about half throttle is pleanty fast for this
plane. Not trying to add insult to injury or start an arguement, but why over power this plane it doesn't
need it.

Don't freak out over the front bearing part# it used to be 18-6999 but it has been replaced by 18-0002
The tool that comes with the engine is part# 11-6191 this tool is not strong enough to loosen the cylinder head. It will break one of it's tangs off and cause you to put a big deep freaking scratch on the cylinder head.
Don't ask me how i know. But i was a star in that stupidity.

And that stuff in there might not be rust. Congealed castor oil looks a lot like rust or varnish. Soak the engine in some fuel and if it is castor oil, the fuel will dissolve it and you can flush it out. Worst case, if it does turn out to be rust, you have to remove the cransshaft to replace the bearings anyway. At that point, it is easy to clean the rust off. Clean that sucker up and replace the bearings andprestoyou have a new engine. Remember, the only things in the engine that can rust are the bearings and the crankshaft. You have cleaned the crankshaft and replaced the bearings, so no more rust problem.

I have no problem with cleaning the engine and putting new bearings in. However I cannot remove the head.I talked to the seller and he agreed to letting me return it w/ a full refund. I will be getting an evolution.46 for the se.I had one in a showtime for a few years and ran it as lean as I could at full throttle every flight with no problems ever. Thanks for all the input.
